Ask a dietitian

Q: I know whole wheat is the best bread to buy, but are there other things I should look for?

A: Some breads and crackers contain trans fat despite the push to eliminate partially hydrogenated oils from foods. Buy only those with zero grams of trans fat per serving. The words "partially hydrogenated oil" should not be in the first five ingredients of the product to ensure the item does not contain trans fat.
