Sewanee opens with 30-7 victory

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Sewanee began its 2012 football season Saturday afternoon with a smashing 30-7 victory over visiting Puget Sound.

Building on a 5-5 season that was its first with more than two wins since 2005, Sewanee far exceeded its 11-point defeat of the Loggers in Tacoma, Wash., last year. Although Puget Sound returned its entire starting offensive unit, the Tigers had a 469-267 edge in offensive yardage and intercepted four passes.

Sewanee scored first on a 37-yard field goal by Garrett Schlosser but fell behind 7-3 on 32-yard pass reception for All-America candidate Adam Kiffin before erupting to the dominating triumph. The Tigers rang up 463 rushing yards, led by senior fullback Sergio Acosta with 113 yards on 13 carries, including a 28-yard touchdown burst in the second half, and senior slotback Jase Brooks with two first-half touchdowns and 61 yards on 11 runs.

Junior quarterback Curtis Johnson ran 3 yards for the final touchdown.

De'Nard Ford, Grayson Middle Brooks, Murphy Walters and Quentin Jones had the interceptions, and Walters made five tackles for the Tigers, who host Washington & Lee on Hall of Fame Weekend this Saturday.

Puget Sound's Matt Gilbert had 14 tackles.
