Wesleyan in first after win

Tennessee Wesleyan College defeated Reinhardt College 9-5 in the first game of their Appalachian Athletic Conference weekend baseball series Friday and moved into first place with fifth-place Bryan upsetting previous leader Milligan 9-7 in Dayton.

Cody Gaskill and Rafael Carlot each had three hits, two RBIs and two runs for Wesleyan (29-10, 12-3) in its win in Waleska, Ga., countering home runs by Michel Wilis and Joe Niehoff for Reinhardt (15-17, 6-9). Niehoff drove in three runs.

Ryan Santos was 2-for-5 and Jonathon Smith, Brad Pippa, Freddy Lewis and David Lindsay matched him with an RBI apiece for the Bulldogs, and Justin Crowell got the pitching win by going all nine innings.

* Montreat 8, Covenant 6: At Montreat, N.C., the hosts won the AAC game as Covenant (12-12, 6-9) left 10 runners on base. Harrison Fisher, Kurtis Wiles and Taylor Oldham each had two hits for the Scots.

* Lee 9, Talladega 6: At Cleveland, the Flames went to 31-10 despite giving up six runs in the eighth and ninth innings against the Alabama school. Jose Cuevas drove in three runs for Lee, and JJ Costantino went 3-for-4 and scored three times. Tanner Moore was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer, and Trey Burstrom was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Junior Rodriguez also was 2-for-4 and Michael Brown scored two runs for Lee.

Jose Marin was 2-for-5 and matched Ramon Cruz and Jesse Sharbutt with two RBIs each for Talladega (12-24).

* Walters State 8, Chattanooga State 2: At Morristown, the series for first place in the TCCAA began with the nationally ninth-ranked Senators winning behind the 11-strikeout pitching of Michael White (5-0). Garrett Koster was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs and Sam Munson and Logan Bowers each was 3-for-4 for Walters (19-6, 13-2). Isaac Davenport was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Chattanooga State (25-8, 11-4). Adam Whitlock was 2-for-4, and Andy Marinelli had an RBI double.
