TWC wins, Bryan falls in AAC women's play

The fifth-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan College women's basketball team won 68-60 at No. 4 Bluefield in an Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal Thursday, but the seventh-seeded Bryan Lady Lions lost 69-60 at No. 2 Union College.

Amber Smith scored 21 points and Bethany McArthur tallied 10 for Bryan (16-14), and Jessica Southern and Anna Thomas grabbed 13 and eight rebounds. AAC player of the year Brooke Smith had 29 points for Union.

* Lee (w) 77, Brenau 71: At Gainesville, Ga., the hosts cut a 15-point disadvantage to 71-69 but couldn't finish the Southern States Athletic Conference upset against the ninth-ranked team in NAIA Division I.

Katie Nelson had 18 points and 17 rebounds and Angela Spann made 10 free throws and had a crucial putback for Lee (26-3, 14-1) when the margin was two points. Guards Brooke McKinnon and Allison Rader had 15 and 14 points and seven rebounds apiece. Ashley Hagans scored 19 points for Brenau (17-13, 6-10).

Trevecca takes two

NASHVILLE - The Covenant College softball team fell to 0-4 for the season by losing 12-4 in five innings and 6-1 Thursday at Trevecca Nazarene.

Covenant's Kim Cuticchia was 2-for-2 with a double in the first game and 2-for-3 in the second game, when Courtney Wagoner hit a home run.
