Mocs have work to do

Blowout loss to College of Charleston shows UTC where they stand in SoCon race.

Andrew Goudelock scored on a lucky shot.

The College of Charleston guard buried a deep 3-pointer as time expired on the shot-clock Saturday and did so over the outstretched arm of Mocs 7-foot-1 center Jeremy Saffore who came within inches of brushing Goudelock's jersey.

The shot had more arc than a rainbow following a southern summer storm.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga faced two contenders for Southern Conference player of the year honors in less than 24 hours. They barely beat one and were smoked by the other.

"Charleston has good players," UTC coach John Shulman said. "We're trying to guard Goudelock and he makes a shot falling down from 26 feet. We need some of those guys.

"I'm glad to see where we are."

It took a miracle buzzer-beating shot for the Mocs to beat The Citadel and Cameron Wells who had a 28-point game on Thursday.

The Mocs were never close to beating Goudelock and his Cougars in a 90-66 loss to Charleston at home Saturday in McKenzie Arena on regional television. Goudelock scored 22 points against UTC (11-7, 3-2 SoCon).

"I'm not stupid and I knew this was coming," UTC coach John Shulman said. "I told the team, you can look at our stats and they look great, but I'm not sold. I know better than to go just off stats."

Charleston proved to be the dominant team in the league. They're tall, they're fast, they're athletic, they can shoot, rebound and block shots with not only the Mocs, but with one of the best teams in the nation.

The Cougars (11-6, 6-0 SoCon) beat defending national champion North Carolina in overtime and have won their six SoCon contests by an average of 11.1 points.

"There's a reason they're 5-0, now 6-0 in our league, and they definitely are the top of our league and everybody is chasing after them," point guard Keegan Bell said. "We just weren't clicking on the defensive end and especially rebounding."

With the SoCon tournament being held at a truly-neutral site this year in Charlotte, the Cougars can claim their first SoCon crown. They're that good.

The Mocs are not. At least not right now.

"They're like a Georgia Tech maybe," guard Ricky Taylor said. "They're big, long and athletic and a very good team. They came in and got the win. It's given us something to think about.

"We have to get better."
