Shulman adds two from Mississipppi

Xavian Rimmer and Trey Brown will be University of Tennessee at Chattanooga basketball players beginning next season.

The prep stars from Mississippi signed national letters of intent and had their papers processed Thursday.

"I'm excited about the start of this class, and they're what we wanted with two freshmen," UTC coach John Shulman said. "I think both kids are great gets for us."

Rimmer is a 6-foot-2 guard from Piney Woods Country Life School. He is rated No. 8 in the state by Hoop Scoop and within the top 150 players in the nation by ESPN.com. He chose the Mocs over Texas-San Antonio, Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette.

"Xavian is an amazing defender, and he's got a linebacker body and he can shoot the ball," Shulman said. "He's used to winning and comes from a great program."

Brown is a 6-foot-7 forward for Brandon High school and is rated No. 20 in Mississippi. He chose UTC over Southeast Louisiana and Louisiana-Monroe.

"Trey is a fantastic student, and he's long and rangy and shoots it," Shulman said. "He kind of reminds you of a Chris Brown, but he's playing the 4 now and we'll move him to a wing."

Shulman has three more scholarships to award for the 2011-12 season. He said one more player could sign in the next week, which would leave two scholarships for the spring signing period. He said he would prefer that all five newcomers next year are freshmen as opposed to junior college transfers, in part because UTC will have five seniors and three juniors in the rotation next season.

"We have a huge junior class right now, so this is a great time to bring in young kids," Shulman said. "With Xavian and Trey, it's exciting to bring in good, young kids who are used to winning. Xavian has a chance to win a state championship this year."
