Cougars sweep UTC in softball

Mount Pleasant, S.C., was far from a pleasant place for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team Saturday.

Kelsey Hodgson homered in each game as the College of Charleston gave the Lady Mocs their first two Southern Conference losses of the season, 3-0 and 5-1. UTC (29-11, 11-2) scored only the one run despite having 19 runners on base.

The Lady Mocs got only five hits, including doubles by Vivian Morimoto and Lauren Flores, and struck out seven times against Alexa Datko (14-5) in the first game. Michelle Fuzzard (14-6) gave up only six hits in defeat, but Hodgson hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Carly Corthelle and Katie Pesature each was 2-for-3 for the Cougars (27-16, 7-9).

Flores was doubled off second in the third inning after center fielder Kristi Woodall made an outstanding catch on a Lyndsey Stiles line drive.

Nikki Waters (7-3) took the pitching loss in game two, but only two of the four runs she allowed in four innings were unearned. Charleston's Stephanie Saylors (9-8) pitched a six-hitter with no earned runs. Jessica Traxler was 2-for-3 and Kasey Tydingco doubled for UTC, and Sara Poteat had an RBI single in the fourth inning.

The teams play one game today.

n Lee 3-8, Southern Wesleyan 1-0: At Cleveland, Brittany Balough pitched a three-hitter and Katie Deems followed with a five-inning two-hitter as the Lady Flames swept the Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader. Allison Droddy's seventh-inning homer in the first game prevented a double-shutout day.

Ana Coscorrosa was 5-for-5 with four RBIs for Lee (24-14, 15-8). Kaitlyn Grosch was 2-for-2 and scored a run and Danielle Balough and Nicole Rodriguez each was 2-for-3 in game one, and Taylor Horseman and Jenevieve Cena each had two RBIs apiece in the rematch, when Cena, Coscorrosa and Danielle Balough homered and Chelsea Carpenter scored twice.

n Piedmont 10-8, Covenant 2-2: At Demorest, Ga., the Lady Scots fell to 15-11 but Beth Harris went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader. She homered and scored both runs in game one, and Jenni Jobe matched her at 2-for-4 in game two.

n Reinhardt 8-7, Bryan 0-1: At Waleska, Ga., the Appalachian Athletic Conference leaders improved to 34-8 overall, 12-0 in the league, with the sweep of the first-year Lady Lions (6-33, 4-7). Courtney Combs homered for Bryan. Tennessee Wesleyan's AAC doubleheader at Milligan was rained out.

n Rhodes 17-20, Sewanee 0-1: At Sewanee, Sara Bowen pitched a six-inning perfect game with 15 strikeouts for the visiting Lynx in the first of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games. Kali Ousley was 2-for-2 in game two for the Tigers (4-14, 0-12). The teams play another doubleheader today.

n Volunteer State 5-5, Cleveland State 4-1: At Cleveland, Madison McKinney singled in the hosts' run in the first TCCAA game and homered in the second and got the tying run home in the sixth when she ran to second on her strikeout in the dirt, allowing English Nichols to score for the Lady Cougars (22-18, 7-9). But the Lady Pioneers won on Heather Daniel's RBI double in the seventh.
