TWC wins feature 5-HR Bergin game

Propelled by David Bergin's NAIA-record-tying five home runs in Friday's game, Tennessee Wesleyan scored 42 runs in a three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball sweep of visiting Reinhardt.

The Bulldogs won 15-7 on Friday, when Bergin drove in nine runs and tied the national record set by Jake Ford of Spaulding University in a 2003 game against Wesleyan, and added 12-1 and 15-8 victories Saturday in Athens. The first of those went only five innings, and TWC (33-18, 15-6) scored nine runs in the first. Bergin got the pitching win.

Cody Gaskill was 2-for-2 with a homer and five RBIs and Stephen Branca was 4-for-4 with three runs scored in the 12-1 win, and Ryan Santos was 2-for-3 with two doubles and matched Sam Munson's two RBIs. Rafael Carlot was 3-for-3 with a homer, a double and four RBIs and Santos was 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs in the last win, when Jon Smith was 1-for-1 with three RBIs and two runs and Branca and Anthony Boix each was 2-for-4 with three and two runs. Bergin was 0-for-1 but walked twice, had a sacrifice fly and scored twice.

Gaskill was 3-for-4 with a homer and five runs scored Friday; Smith and Munson homered also.

• Southern Polytechnic 3-7, Lee 2-3: At Marietta, Ga., Ryan Danbury drove in two runs in each game as the host Hornets gave the NAIA's top-ranked Flames their first two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference losses of the season.

Roberto Reyes was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the first game for Lee (44-10, 16-2), and Chris Grayson doubled and scored in that game and was 3-for-3 with an RBI in game two, when Preston Scoggins was 2-for-2 and scored twice. Danbury homered in the second game for 22nd-ranked Southern Poly (37-13, 12-6).

• Montreat 3-4, Bryan 2-5: At Dayton, the doubleheader split left the host Lions 24-23 overall and 6-12 in the AAC, where Montreat is 9-11 to go with an 18-26 overall record.

• LaGrange 7, Covenant 5: At LaGrange, Ga., a five-run sixth inning for the home team doomed the Scots (22-13) and sent pitcher Tyler Smith to his first loss after nine wins. David Lockwood was 3-for-5 with two runs and Taylor Oldham was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for Covenant, while James Rollins was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Sterling Witt was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

• Cleveland State 11, Roane State 1: At Harriman, the visiting Cougars used 17 hits and Jaime Harper's pitching to complete a three-game TCCAA series sweep. Harper pitched all seven innings and struck out six Raiders. He gave up seven singles and a double but no earned runs.

The Cougars (24-21, 11-12) had six extra-base hits. Trevor Burgess was 4-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBIs, and Galen Smith doubled and singled and also drove in three runs. Brandon Rader was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Cody Commons and Gray Hutchinson each doubled and singled, Ryan Mutchnick matched those two at 2-for-4, and Grant Zawadzki stole two bases and scored three runs. Demond Tubbs and Edward Clawson each was 2-for-3 for Roane, dropping to 7-15 in league games.
