Guards key UTC victory

ELON, N.C.-Kayla Christopher scored 21 points and fellow guard Tenisha Townsend made seven free throws in the final minute to help the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team to a 73-63 win Monday night at Elon.

The victory put the Lady Mocs alone in third place in the Southern Conference standings with one game remaining. UTC (15-13, 12-7), which has won five of its past six games, wraps up its regular season Saturday at Western Carolina.

The Lady Mocs trailed Elon 28-24 at halftime and took the lead for good on a Bailey Dewart 3-pointer with 15:22 remaining. Townsend finished with 13 points, going 9-for-11 from the line, and six rebounds.

Christopher hit four 3-pointers and grabbed eight rebounds. Kylie Lambert added 12 points and five rebounds, while Taylor Hall scored all eight of her points in the final 8:30.

Whitney Hood, the SoCon's leading scorer, sat out much of the first half with two fouls and fouled out of the game with 1:28 to play. She finished with five points, two rebounds and four turnovers in 20 minutes of action.

Ali Ford led Elon (17-11, 11-8) with 13 points.
