Sandy Zensen, Isidro Loaiza go into Bryan College hall of fame

Bryan College athletic director Sandy Zensen, the Lions' soccer coach for the 22 years before this one, and one of his former players, Isidro Loaiza, were inducted into the Dayton school's athletic hall of fame during homecoming festivities Saturday. Zensen was 267-134-27 and a six-time Appalachian Athletic Conference coach of the year with two national coaching honors. Loaiza, who now lives in Chattanooga, played for him from 1997 to 2000 and was on three conference championship teams and two National Christian College Athletic Association All-America teams.

Golf

• Led by medalist Courtney Shelton with a 139 for 36 holes, the Lee University women's golf team finished first out of 22 teams in the Birmingham Southern College Shootout with a 292 Sunday and a 295 Monday. The Lady Flames finished seven strokes ahead of runner-up University of the Cumberlands. Lee's Sloane Skinner was eighth at 147 and Bernadette Little tied for ninth at 148 with Madison Alexander sharing 27th place at 153. The Sewanee team tied for 18th at 118, but Tigers freshman Emily Javadi from Baylor tied for second at even-par 140 and Signal Mountain graduate Sarah Dolmovich of host BSC was fourth at 143.

Fishing

• Thomas Helton of Charleston, Tenn., finished seventh among the boaters in the Walmart Bass Fishing League Regional tournament this past weekend on Lake Seminole at Bainbridge, Ga. His 15-bass limit for the three days totaled 35 pounds, 7 ounces and earned him $700. Wayne Christopher of Huntsville won with 43-6 and got a Ranger Z518 boat with a 200-horsepower outboard motor plus a Chevrolet 1500 Silverado. The top six finishers earned entry into the BFL All-American. In the co-angler ranks won by Jason Norris of Ohatchee, Ala., John Cook of Scottsboro was fifth, Jett Loach of Ringgold was ninth and Jody Moore of Dalton was 10th.

Auto Racing

• Tom Neubert from Corryton, Tenn., won the 4.70-second class Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip in his "World's Fastest '57 Chevy." A 4.72 run got him the $5,000 top prize. Ossie Newcomb of Knoxville was second. Rain prevented the final run in the Super Pro class, resulting in a split of $3,000 for Kevin Rodden and Demick Laney. Ray Zumstein of Harrison won the Foot Brake class with a 7.46 on a 7.45 dial in his 1971 Dodge. Stephen McCrory was second. The strip also held races Sunday with Ron Lane of Soddy-Daisy winning in Super Pro with a 5.06 on a 5.06 and Michael McEntyre of Calhoun and Gary Blankenship of Summerville finishing second and third. Lane's wife, Eva, was fourth. Jimmy Talbot won the Foot Brake class with a 7.01 on a 7.00 in a '70 Camaro, and McCrory was second again.

Volleyball

• Tennessee Temple University extended its volleyball winning streak to four with a 25-23, 25-17, 27-25 home win Monday against Judson. Shatoya Medford had 10 kills and 11 digs, Kourtney Chorman made eight kills and Lynncoya Gardner had 19 assists for the Lady Crusaders (12-13), winning for the sixth time in seven matches.

Soccer

• The Tennessee Temple women's soccer team won 6-1 at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala., on Monday, and the Temple men pulled out a 4-3 overtime win in the doubleheader. The TTU guys are 6-7; the Lady Crusaders are 4-8-1.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga Cyclones K baseball team went 1-0-1 in the rain-shortened Southern Wood Bat Fall 18-under World Series this past weekend in Cleveland. The 16-18-year-old Cyclones tied the Alabama Southern Prospects 2-2 with Dakota Hudson striking out six batters in three innings and Charlie Ward and Drew Williams each pitching two scoreless innings. Winston Whitener had an RBI double and scored and Tyler Higdon had two hits and an RBI for the Cyclones. Zach Thompson and Whitener pitched a 5-2 win over Atlanta's OTCs 18s, when Higdon drove in two runs, Whitener batted in one and scored two and Kyle Kapherr scored twice. The Cyclones V team (ages 13-17) beat Atlanta Sportstech 6-2 behind the pitching of Cole Vaughn and Thomas Boals, with Hunter Oliver delivering two hits and two RBIs and Jackson Bell adding a two-run hit. The V's lost 3-0 to Birmingham Baseball.

Bocce

• Chattanooga Pest Co. owner David Jones won the winner-take-it-all prize Saturday in Chattanooga's ninth annual Calvanese singles bocce tournament. Dr. Frank Knight was second, Bill Caulkins was third and Carolyn Caulkins was fourth.
