Bryan College beats Cumberlands twice

Bryan College downed the University of the Cumberlands 6-3 and 5-4 in NAIA softball Thursday.

Sarah Hundley was the winning pitcher in each, as the starter in game one and the reliever benefiting from a three-run Lady Lions seventh inning in game two. That included a two-run home run by Rachel Kirby, and Heather Daniel and Taylor Yates each homered and singled in the game.

Those two, Katie Vaughn and Alexsa Valdes had two hits apiece for Bryan (20-22). Daniel was 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs and Kirstie Jennings was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game one, when Valdes went 2-for-3.

* Tennessee Temple 10-9, Sewanee 0-1: At Sewanee, Carley Daniel pitched the shutout and went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBIs for the visiting Lady Crusaders (23-14) in game one, when Heather Smith also was 2-for-3 and Bree Smith had a two-run double.

Megan Roysden struck out 12 batters in game two, when Ashlyn Mitchell was 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles and two RBIs, Raven Pope homered and tripled and drove in four runs and Bree Smith homered and singled for Temple, which won one game in its debut season last year.

Sarah Fleming was 2-for-3 in the first game for Sewanee, and Sara Burklin was 3-for-3 with Kayla Sewell and Grace Cobbs going 2-for-4 in the rematch.

* Gordon 8-3, Cleveland State 0-5: Tuesday at Barnesville, Ga., Maura Ditto hit a three-run homer and Amber Covington and Sydney Howell also homered as the Lady Cougars rebounded from the shutout loss to improve to 14-23.

Sara O'Rear had five hits in the doubleheader for Cleveland State, and Leslie Still was 2-for-4 in the win behind pitcher Kelsey Capella. The Lady Cougars are scheduled to host Dyersburg State in TCCAA doubleheaders today and Saturday, while Chattanooga State plays at Roane State.
