UTC's O'Brien, Chadwell earn Dayle May academic award and more Chattanooga region sports news

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga tennis standout Kaylene Chadwell and track and cross country athlete Patrick O'Brien were honored as 2015 Dayle May Award winners as the male and female athletes with the highest grade point averages on Thursday night as part of Academic Night at halftime of the Mocs' basketball game against VMI. Chadwell, a first-team all-Southern Conference doubles player, is a communications major with a 3.88 GPA, while O'Brien is a four-year letter winner for UTC and biochemistry major with a 4.0 GPA. Chadwell and O'Brien both were given engraved watches from Dayle May Jewelers for their academic success. The work in the classroom by these two athletes helped UTC athletes post a cumulative 3.0 GPA for the second straight semester, with 41 student athletes earning a 4.0 in the fall semester.

Tennis

* Murray County High School standout Gabbie Bordelon signed scholarship papers Thursday to continue her tennis career at Dalton State College. She has played No. 1 or 2 singles throughout her four years with the Lady Indians and has a 3.8 GPA. "Gabbie is a great young lady. She will be an asset to our tennis program and to the college as a whole," said DSC coach Michel Bates, who with the Dalton Parks and Recreation Department has worked with Bordelon for six years.

* The UTC men's and women's tennis teams are at home this weekend, with the women's team hosting Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. on Saturday at McCallie School's Strang-Voges Tennis Center while the Mocs men will take on Austin Peay on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Belmont at 11 a.m. Sunday morning at the Hixson Racquet Club. The UTC women's team (1-0) will look to build on its 7-0 win over Austin Peay on Monday, but the Mocs men (0-2) are looking for their first win after losing road matches at at MTSU and No. 6 North Carolina to open the spring season.
