KNOXVILLE -- Another freshman forward is leaving Tennessee's basketball program.
According to a program official, Willie Carmichael completed the paperwork required to transfer Tuesday afternoon and will leave the Volunteers after one season.
Tariq Owens elected to transfer from Tennessee last month and likely will land at St. John's.
New Vols coach Rick Barnes addressed Carmichael's departure while meeting with reporters before Tuesday night's Big Orange Caravan stop in Memphis.
"I think any time there's a coaching change and things happen ... sometimes it just doesn't work," Barnes said. "Even for me, a new start has been great. I think Willie is a super, super person. There's going to be a lot of people that want him. But he felt it was time for a fresh start, too.
"With that, we're recruiting. We're going to continue to recruit. We never stopped doing that, and we'll just see who's out there, who's available. If it's somebody we think that will fit, we'll certainly make a run at it."
The 6-foot-8, 210-pound Apopka (Fla.) High School standout followed former Vols coach Donnie Tyndall to Tennessee after signing with Tyndall at Southern Mississippi.
In his freshman season, Carmichael started 19 games and averaged nearly 15 minutes per game. In 32 games, he recorded more personal fouls (101) than points (95) while averaging 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds on 52 percent shooting. Carmichael's 101 fouls were the most by a Tennessee player since Brian Williams piled up 101 in 32 games during the 2010-11 season.
Carmichael scored a career-high 10 points and grabbed a career-best seven rebounds in his second collegiate game against Texas Southern last November, and he scored nine points with six rebounds against Kansas State and had nine points with five rebounds at Mississippi State. He picked up at least four fouls in 16 games and fouled out of a game four times.
In six of the last 13 games of the season, Carmichael played nine minutes or less.
Carmichael's departure means Barnes now has two available scholarship spots for next season and the Vols will return just seven scholarship players and walk-on point guard Braxton Bonds from the 14-player roster that finished last season.
The Vols have four incoming players in the 2015 class. Guard Shembari Phillips and forwards Admiral Schofield and Ray Kasongo all have signed with Tennessee. Point guard Lamonte' Turner has yet to sign after committing to the Vols last week.
Two remaining recruiting targets include Kyle Alexander, a 6-10 forward out of Canada, and former Charlotte signee, Ebuka Izundu, who has a tie to Tennessee assistant coach Desmond Oliver, who recruited him for the 49ers.
Alexander and Izundu recently took official visits to Knoxville. Cincinnati, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Miami also are reportedly in pursuit of Izundu. Alexander also visited New Mexico this past weekend.
