Around the Region: Kinsey Cichowitz named first-team All-American

Lee University senior midfielder Kinsey Cichowitz was named a 2016 NCAA Division II women's first-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She is the first such honoree for the Lady Flames and the only 2016 All-American for the Gulf South Conference except for second-team selection Marjorie Boilesen from West Florida. "It is a tremendous honor for Kinsey and our program," Lee coach Chris Hennessey said in a school release. "It is outstanding to see the respect our girls have earned on a national level. Kinsey has put in the work over the past four years and is well deserving." Cichowitz had 14 goals and two assists this season for the Lady Flames, who went 14-3-2, shared the GSC regular-season title and reached the national playoffs for the second year in a row.

* Bryan College men's soccer players Rafael Mentzingen and Stephen Ricketts and the Lady Lions' Hana Mizoguchi were named to the College Division District 2 first-team all-academic teams for 2016 by the College Sports Information Directors of America, and Mentzingen and Ricketts were second-team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. The college division includes NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools, and that group's District 2 encompasses Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee. Ricketts is a junior integrated marketing major with a 3.91 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, while Mentzingen, a sophomore business and economics/finance major, has a 3.90 GPA and had 12 goals and five assists this season. Mizoguchi is a senior communications major with a 3.82 GPA who had team highs of nine goals and six assists in 2016. She and Mentzingen were All-Appalachian Athletic Conference first-teamers; Ricketts made the men's All-AAC second team.

Basketball

* The Cleveland State basketball teams swept visiting Volunteer State in a TCCAA doubleheader Friday evening, 88-70 in the men's game and 62-52 in the women's. Tevin Olison and Jordan Olison scored 24 and 21 points for the winning Cougars (8-1, 4-1), Tevin with three 3-point baskets and Jordan with 9-for-11 shooting overall and four assists, while Jordan Williams scored 14 points. Cam Copeland had seven assists with nine points, and Romero Hill had eight rebounds. Ty Taylor led Vol State with 15 points. For the Lady Cougars (7-4, 3-2), Leisa Butler scored 19 points and Keya Jenkins and Abby Hubert added 12 apiece, while Jenkins had 10 rebounds and Porchia Turner grabbed nine. Julia Gaither had five assists and three blocked shots. Vol State got 20 points and nine rebounds from Kendrea Duke, 13 points and 11 rebounds from Jemiah Harrison, 13 points and six assists from Zoe Johnson and 10 rebounds and three blocks from Denisha Bowman.

* Darrius Fugh and Daniel Parrish scored 24 and 21 points as the Georgia Northwestern men's basketball team beat the Bryan College junior varsity 94-68 Thursday night at the Rossville Athletic Center. Fugh and Parrish each had 17 points in the first half, when they were a combined 14-of-17 from the field and each was 3-for-4 from 3-point distance. The Bobcats (2-2) led 51-24 at halftime. Alex Rattanaxay had eight assists and Fugh had 10 rebounds in the win. Grant Palmer had 17 points and eight rebounds and Tyler Steinmetz scored 14 points for the JV Lions. The Bryan JV women won 73-48 with 22 points from Jacqueline Ellis. Katy Phillips had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Sprite Dyer added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Bobcats (0-6).

* Freshman Rebecca Cheeks from Sonoraville High School led the Reinhardt women's basketball team in scoring with 19 points and also had eight rebounds in the Lady Eagles' first loss of the season, a 76-66 AAC defeat Wednesday at 23rd-ranked Milligan. Freshman Bethany Headrick from Ringgold also had eight rebounds.
