Lee University junior forward Summer Lanter from Soddy-Daisy was announced Monday as co-player of the year in Gulf South Conference women's soccer, and senior midfielder Kinsey Cichowitz from Colorado joined her from the Lady Flames on the All-GSC first team and was the player of the week after totaling three goals and an assist in wins over Valdosta State and West Georgia. That gave her 14 goals and two assists in 2016. Four Lady Flames were second-team All-GSC: goalkeeper Haley Gribler and forward Lauren Peters from Ohio, defender Meagan Newman from South Africa and midfielder McKenzie Bricker from Collierville, Tenn., by way of the University of Memphis. "I am very happy for Summer," coach Chris Hennessey said in a Lee release. "She is a player that never stops working on the field. Whenever games are tight she always seems to come up with an assist or a goal at the right time. She possesses so much quality and really leads by example from the front." Hennessey noted that Lanter and Cichowitz have combined for 25 goals and "been so consistent." West Florida's Marjorie Boilesen was the other co-player of the year as well as GSC freshman of the year.
* Lee senior forward David Perez from Northwest Whitfield High School made the All-GSC men's soccer first team released Monday, and senior midfielders Quade Marinell and Robbie Cutchin were second-team all-conference. The Flames play in a GSC tournament quarterfinal tonight at defending champion West Alabama.
* Bryan College had the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer offensive player of the week for the third consecutive time with Rafael Mentzingen earning the latest honor for his two goals each in the Lions' 4-3 loss to Montreat and 4-3 win over Tennessee Wesleyan. He added an assist against Montreat. He has 11 goals and five assists for the season.
Auto Racing
* Ron Lee won the Super Pro class Saturday at Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip, where there were 92 entries in 14 classes and entry fees went to charity. Lee won with a 4.81-second run in a Marvin Crutcher 1927 Ford Roadster powered by a supercharged 350 small-block engine, and Cody Holloway was second in a 1965 Chevy II. Jim Boseley and Jamie Brackett were first and second in the 6.0 class with Wayne Stover and Mike Faltesea first and second in 7.0, Jim Brackett and Rubin Prince first and second in All-Out, Jeff Nance and Faltesea first and second in True Street, Devin Grace and Corey Causby the top two in Street King, Billy Smith and Dee Hale the top two in NA and Joe Gramling the winner in Quick Street. Ray Zumstein won the Foot Brake class with Chris Smith second, and Joel Collins won in Diesel, Sean Ergdahl in Import, Macy Ludolph in Junior Dragster and Brian Wilson in Motorcycle.
Golf
* Both Dalton State golf teams are leading the 36-hole SSAC Preview Tournament after the first round Monday at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, Ala. The Roadrunners men had a collective 281 and lead by 17 strokes, led by Chase Cole in first place individually at 3-under-par 68 and teammate S.M. Lee at 69. Dalton Johnson and Ben Rebne added 72s. The female Roadrunners shot 297 for a 10-stroke margin with Katie Dalton the individual leader at 72, Isabel Rijos at 73, Tia Teiniketo at 75, Carolin Griffin at 77 and Haejin Choe at 78.
Volleyball
* Milligan College freshman Kellee Geren from Cleveland High School is the AAC volleyball setter of the week for the fifth time this season and second in a row after recording 51, 50 and 50 assists in three wins, the last two in only four sets. Geren totaled 40 digs while averaging 11.62 assists per set. She is ninth in the NAIA with 1,181 this season.
Field Hockey
* Sewanee freshman Ceara Caffrey was selected the Southern Athletic Association field hockey offensive player of the week after scoring both goals in the Tigers' come-from-behind 2-1 win Saturday against Transylvania. She has nine goals and two assists.
