Around the Region: Chickamauga man chosen for dirt racing hall of fame

Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., has been chosen for 2017 induction into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame, which had Skip Arp of Georgetown, Tenn., among its 2015 inductees. McDowell, a long-successful driver and driving-school instructor, got the hall's Sportsman Award in 2011. His imminent induction was announced Saturday at Portsmouth, Ohio. Among many notable career achievements, he won the 1994 Southern All Star Series and the 1999 Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series and twice each won the Dixie Shootout and the USA Nationals. Among his other big race victories were the 2005 World 100, the National 100 and the 2014 Dream at Eldora with a $100,000 payday. He and his driving school are now affiliated with Team Dillon.

Volleyball

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team lost 3-0 to visiting Samford in a Southern Conference match Wednesday in Maclellan Gym. Set scores were 26-24, 25-13, 25-19. Erin Bogner had 15 kills for Samford (13-10, 4-4), while Miranda Elpers led UTC (11-10, 4-4) with nine and Emily Plumlee added seven. The Mocs' Lauren Greenspoon had 18 assists and Madison Bergren had 12, while Rachel Petkosh and Allie Davenport had 17 and 12 digs.

* Sierra Ingraham and Sundara Chinn had 11 and 10 kills and 11 and 21 digs in Tennessee Wesleyan's 3-0 Appalachian Athletic conference loss (25-23, 25-17, 25-21) at league co-leader Milligan on Tuesday. Alexan Crittenden had 31 assists for TWU (11-14, 8-8).

* Former East Hamilton standout and current Christian Brothers University outside hitter Emma Lenoir for the fifth time this year has been selected freshman of the week in the Gulf South Conference. Although CBU went 0-4 for the week, Lenoir totaled 44 kills, 31 digs, seven aces and three blocks.

Swimming

* Sewanee freshman Andrew Freibert was the College Swimming News as well as the Southern Athletic Association swimmer of the week for his contributions to the Tigers' comeback victory over Centre last weekend. They didn't lead until the concluding 200-yard freestyle relay, which Freibert led off with a 50 leg of 22.09 seconds. He previously won the 50 and 100 free races in 22.23 and 48.16.

Golf

* The Dalton State men's golfers, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, won the Bojangles Tennessee Intercollegiate tournament Tuesday at Tennessee National Golf Club by seven strokes with host Tennessee Wesleyan tying for fifth. Dalton State's Ben Rebne had a 70 for the lowest final round and finished one stroke behind the medalist from SCAD-Atlanta, while S.M. Lee and Adam Morris tied for fifth.

* After one Sewanee men's golf team finished sixth in a weekend tournament at Danville, Ky., a different group wound up sixth out of 15 teams in the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Ga. The Tigers, ranked 19th in NCAA Division III, closed with a 296 for a 36-hole 600, 29 shots behind fifth-ranked winner Rhodes. Covenant was 14th at 638. Sewanee's Gray Matthews tied for 10th individually at 146, and Taylor Mottern and Tommy Oliver also made the top 25 at 150 and 151.

Soccer

* The Bryan College women's soccer team lost 2-0 in an AAC match Wednesday night at Reinhardt. Morgana Hardt da Silva had 11 saves in defeat for the Lady Lions (8-7, 4-3).

* Tennessee Wesleyan's soccer teams beat the Milligan women 2-1 and the Milligan men 5-0 in an AAC doubleheader Tuesday in Athens. Fernando Carcamo scored the first goal at 53:50 and Jake McBrayer and Ben Timms added two apiece for the Bulldogs (10-1-4, 6-0-1), who got assists from OT Bah, Ben Clements, Richie Volney and Joe Taylor. For the Lady Bulldogs (9-4-1, 5-2-1), Nicole Broderick scored at 51:44 and assisted on an Amy Panayi goal at 53:53. Wesleyan goalkeeper McKenna Loges was the AAC defensive player of the week for the second time in a row after posting two shutout wins and making nine saves in a 1-0 defeat of 14th-ranked Reinhardt.
