Baseball

* Former Ooltewah and Central high school baseball coach and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe athletic director Gene Lively will be inducted Saturday into the Carson-Newman Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony and barbecue buffet is set for 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse on the campus in Jefferson City, Tenn. Lively, 72, still teaches at LFO. A Tyner graduate, he played four years for Carson-Newman and set its still-standing batting-average record of .476 as a sophomore outfielder for the 1965 Eagles who won the school's first national championship. He also had the winning RBI hit in the NAIA national-title game. Lively was the head baseball coach for Jefferson County and Unicoi County high schools for a total of six years before leading Ooltewah's Owls from 1976 to 1983 and Central's Purple Pounders from 1984 to 2002. The Central stadium is named for him, and he already is in the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association, Greater Chattanooga and Central halls of fame. Going into his alma mater's hall is "icing on the cake," Lively said. "You don't start out playing ball to get these kinds of awards, but it ends up being nice."
