The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is in fifth place out of 20 teams with one round to go in the Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament on the Turtle Point course at Kiawah Island, S.C., and the Mocs' Monica San Juan is tied for second individually after adding a 73 Monday to her opening 70. Coastal Carolina's Malene Krolboll Hansen leads with a 142, and her Chanticleers are the team leader at 577 with Ole Miss at 583, Campbell and College of Charleston at 586 and UTC at 591. UTC's Holly Morgan is tied for 19th at 148, and Maria Pineiro and Cristina Perez are at 150 and 151.
* Led by Caroline Griffin in a tie for second at 74 (with teammate Carly Shane also at 74 playing as an individual), the Dalton State women's team is tied for first with SCAD-Savannah midway through the 12-team Chick-fil-A Collegiate at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Ga. Dalton State's Isabel Rijos is tied for sixth at 77 with Rachel Rebne 12th (playing as an individual) at 78, Katie Dalton tied for 13th at 79 and Tia Teiniketo tied for 16th at 80.
Auto Racing
* East Ridge resident Craig Cash won the $2,500 top prize in the Super Pro class this past Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. The 46-year-old Cash won with a 6.28-second run on a 6.26 dial in a 1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z powered by a modified 454 big-block Chevy engine built by his father, strip veteran Johnny Cash. Dickey Forrester from Hickory Flat, Ga., was second in a 1967 Camaro Z28 after a 6.70 run on a 6.69 dial. Marty Goldsmith of Ringgold won the Foot Brake eliminations - he was the 2015 strip champion for that class - with a 7.83 run on a 7.82 dial in a 1974 Dodge, and Hall of Famer L.C. Bigham, David Bigham and Melvin Croft were second through fourth. Bryson Kaiser of Rock Spring won the Junior Dragster class with Adrian Wilson of Tallapoosa, Ga., second. Amy Farrow had the low elapsed time (5.03 seconds) and top speed (135 mph) of the meet in a Chevy dragster.
Soccer
* Bryan College freshman midfielder Brad Spooner repeated as the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer offensive player of the week and Bryan goalkeeper Alex Horton was the defensive honoree for their parts in the 11th-ranked Lions' 2-0-1 week. Spooner had two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime against Reinhardt, and an assist in the two wins, and the opponents totaled only two goals against Horton and his teammates.
Volleyball
* Tennessee Wesleyan freshman Sundara Chinn was the AAC volleyball attacker of the week after having matches of 22 and 20 kills and averaging 4.33 kills per set for the week, and Milligan freshman Kellee Geren from Cleveland High School was the setter of the week for the fourth time for her 34 assists with 12 digs in the 25-6 Lady Buffs' only match. She surpassed 1,000 assists for the season. Chinn had 39 digs in addition to her 52 kills in three matches.
Running
* Bryan senior Tyler Boone was the AAC men's cross country runner of the week for the third time in four weeks after his fifth-place finish out of 216 runners in the Sand Shark Invitational last Saturday in South Carolina. He finished the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 14 seconds, the third fastest time for an NAIA participant.
Tennis
* UTC has one of 36 coed club and intramural teams competing this weekend in the USTA Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C. Vanderbilt is the only other Tennessee university participating, The Friday-Sunday event was postponed from Oct. 7-9 by Hurricane Matthews. It is the season opener for the TOC season, and the first- and second-place teams will earn berths in the April 13-15 national championships in Orlando, Fla. The USTA TOC program began in 2000 and now includes more than 35,000 student-athletes nationwide. Georgia won the fall invitational last year after Florida won in 2013 and 2014.
