The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's team began its fall schedule this past weekend at the Dale Short Invite in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
The Mocs faced host Middle Tennessee on Friday, with Max Grobbelaar's 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7) defeat of Michael Apple the lone UTC win in six singles and three doubles matches.
Against Austin Peay on Saturday, the Mocs took two of three doubles matches and got a singles win from Simon Bustamante, 6-2, 6-3 over Chad Woodham. The doubles wins were Michael Birnbaum and Derrick Brown beating James Mitchell and Manuel Montenegro 8-3 and Grobbelaar and Paul LaHue beating Alex Kartsonis and Woodham by the same score.
Against the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Sunday, when there were seven singles matches in addition to three doubles, LaHue's 6-1, 6-7 (6) 1-0 (6) outlasting of Fernando Vargas was the lone win for the Mocs.
They'll return to competition in the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Champions Club, with UTC's women's team also participating.
