Area Sports Notes: Bryan has eight soccer men, 14 total fall NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Bryan College had eight men's soccer players on the list of 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, along with four volleyball players and two women's soccer players. Dalton State was represented by senior Jordan Man in men's soccer and senior Rachel Hardin and juniors Alyssa Bilbrey and Brittany Jensen in women's soccer, and Tennessee Wesleyan had senior McKenna Loges and junior Skotti Bullington in women's soccer and junior Jacob Loper in men's soccer. The honor requires junior or higher status and at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The Bryan soccer Scholar-Athletes were repeaters Stephen Ricketts and Kevin Roenpage plus Keith Lyons, Marcelo Monteiro, Jason Ward, Isaac Hendrix, Timothy Hostetler, Jonathan Montoya and women's repeaters Hannah Bohner and Morgana Hardt da Silva. Bryan's volleyball honorees were Katelin Scoggins, Veronica Salas, Micayla Keen and Mariah Dunlop. Another volleyball Scholar-Athlete was Milligan's Marissa Langford from Cleveland High School.

Baseball

-Heritage had six senior baseball players sign college scholarship papers Friday at the school. Infielders Johnny Hickman and Alex Coulter are headed to East Georgia State College. Hickman was a middle-of-the-order batter for the Generals last year and hit .376 with three homers, 36 RBIs and 41 runs scored, while Coulter batted .324 with 18 RBIs. Pitcher Tripp Church is headed to Augusta University after going 7-0 with a 2.26 ERA as a junior. Outfielder Lance Dockery will stay near home at Chattanooga State coming off a junior year in which he hit .333 with 28 RBIs, 31 runs scored and a .507 on-base percentage. Outfielder/pitcher Blake Bryan, who hit .243 with 27 runs scored and 15 RBIs, is headed to Carson-Newman, while left-handed pitcher Justin Morris has signed papers to play at West Georgia.

Basketball

-Lee University beat visiting West Georgia 70-52 in Gulf South men's basketball Saturday. Ryan Montgomery had 12 points and eight rebounds and Colton Blevins had 12 points and six assists for the Flames (6-1, 2-0), who held the Wolves to 29-percent shooting. West Georgia's women won 72-63 with three players totaling 62 points while Lee (6-2, 1-1) was led by Shelby Brown with 15 points and nine rebounds and Carrie Cheeks with 11 points.

-Reed Dungan's 27 points and Sean Chisolm's 25 plus 10 rebounds led Dalton State to an 85-81 SSAC home win Saturday against Middle Georgia State. Raheem England had nine rebounds with 10 points for the Roadrunners (7-2, 2-0).

-Sarah Cain and Karli Combs hit six and five 3-point shots and scored 22 and 19 points in leading Bryan's women to an 82-50 AAC rout of visiting St. Andrews. Amber Levi scored 15 and Deandra Luna had six assists for Bryan (7-3, 4-2). The Bryan men (8-4, 3-2) also won, 83-69, as Oteriah Lee and Terrance Scales scored 18 points each with eight and five assists, Brice Cusick scored 17 and E.J. Bush had 14 points and seven rebounds.

-Sewanee's men jumped to a 25-4 lead and beat visiting Centre 70-63 in their SAA opener, as Cam Caldwell and Luke Smith had 17 and 14 points and eight rebounds each and Hunter Buescher and Adrian Thomas scored 15 and 13.

-The Covenant women beat visiting Brevard 77-66 as Jessica Bell and Emma Grimes each scored 16 points and Joanna Smith had 14 rebounds with 12 points. Raquel Rosa and Bekah Walter also had 12 points each. The Covenant men won 93-64 over Berea with 30 points and 5-of-5 3-point shooting from Patjo Twagirayezu. Will Crumly was 8-of-9 from the field and scored 20 points, while James Mitchell also hit five 3s for 15 points and Berto Dryden had six assists with 10 points. Crumly and Caleb Haynes had eight rebounds apiece.

-Motlow State's men stayed perfect in TCCAA play with a 96-66 win over Chattanooga State (6-3, 4-2). Elijah Gibson and Maleek Taylor led the Tigers in defeat with 14 and 12 points. The Lady Tigers won both at Volunteer State and Motlow this weekend. Cleveland State's women won 73-67 at Motlow and 66-62 at Vol State, where the Cleveland men won 85-69.

-Deontae Jackson had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Tyler Phillips had 15 points and 17 rebounds Friday night for Georgia Northwestern, but the Bobcats (2-7) lost 148-85 at Warren Wilson, which leads USCAA Division II with 109.5 points a game.

Football

-Times Free Press sports writer and "Press Row" radio co-host David Paschall will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Admission costs $12 with a meal, $4 without.
