Area Sports Notes: Baylor Swim Club boys finish sixth in USA Winter Juniors

Trey Freeman of the Baylor Swim Club completed a strong showing at the USA Swimming Speedo Winter Juniors with a grueling final day in Knoxville that included a third place in the 1650 freestyle, a 13th in the 100 free and the anchor leg of the fifth-place 4x100 free relay - the fifth top-six relay of the meet for him, Jack Kirby, Zach Althoff and Piotr Kurleto. Kirby was ninth Saturday in the 200 backstroke, with James Marcum from McCallie/GPS 18th, and BSC's Luis Sebastian Weekes was 23rd in the 200 breaststroke. The Baylor club finished sixth out of the 70 boys' teams that scored at least one point.

Basketball

-The Bryan College women beat visiting Montreat 77-38 in Appalachian Athletic Conference basketball Saturday, but nationally 19th-ranked Montreat won the men's game 86-77. Amber Levi and Karli Combs scored 20 and 17 points with four and five 3-point baskets for Bryan's Lady Lions (9-3, 6-2), and Deandra Luna had six assists. Caleb Tuck scored 20 points and E.J. Bush had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions (9-5, 4-3), who got 11 points from Tyler Yoder and 10 plus five assists from Oteriah Lee.

-Tennessee Wesleyan swept its AAC doubleheader against visiting St. Andrews, 72-61 in the women's game and 78-75 in the men's. Hunter Simpson had 17 points and four steals and Haylee Morrow and Summer Morris scored 13 and 12 points for the first-place Lady Bulldogs (9-3, 8-1). Kenny Dean led the TWC men (5-9, 3-4) with 20 points and five assists, while Andre Applewhite had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Jalen Oliver 15 points and four assists.

-Despite 20 points and nine rebounds from Adrian Thomas and a 15-point halftime lead, Sewanee lost 64-59 in Division III men's basketball Saturday at 5-1 Huntingdon. Luke Smith had 14 points and five assists for Sewanee (4-4).

-Eveline Parsons scored 22 points and her sixth 3-pointer, with eight seconds to go, sealed a 66-65 win for the Berry women on Saturday at Covenant. Alex Weems made 10 of 10 free throws and totaled 16 points for Berry (3-4). Emma Grimes scored 15 with four 3s for the Lady Scots (3-4), while Joanna Smith had 11 points and Bekah Walter had six assists.

-Even in losing the women's championship game of its Tim Walthour Memorial Tournament on Saturday, 67-47 to Hiwassee, Georgia Northwestern displayed its progress. With their only player taller than 5-foot-8 out with an injury, the seven Lady Bobcats (7-2) played the much bigger Lady Tigers (8-5) pretty evenly after the guests took a 20-4 lead. "Hiwassee beat us by more than 60 points in a game last year and another time by almost 50, so today just showed that we've really come pretty far," GNTC coach David Stephenson said. Tori Harvey scored 20 points and Jayla Stone added 15 in the loss, while Valerie Cheek scored 19 and J'lynn Majors and Ny'asia Holmes had 15 and 12 for the Lady Tigers. Friday, the Lady Bobcats beat Trinity Baptist from Florida 67-51 as Stone scored 19 points, Harvey had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Taylor Bethune had 10 points and eight rebounds and Katy Phillips also scored 10.

Track & Field

-Tennessee Wesleyan had the AAC's first women's and men's indoor track athletes of the year for the winter season, Alexis Lankford and Josh Parson both for their performances in Birmingham-Southern's Panther Icebreaker meet that included NCAA Division I and II teams. Lankford finished seventh in the women's 60-meter dash in a school-record 7.95 seconds, and Parsons won the men's 200 in 21.70 and was second in the 60 in 6.79.

General

-Jim Reynolds, the longtime radio play-by-play announcer for UTC men's basketball and football, will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without.
