SEC announces record revenue distribution

Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey announced Thursday afternoon that approximately $584.2 million of total revenue was divided among the league's 14 institutions for the 2015-16 fiscal year, which ended Aug. 31, 2016.

The record amount includes $565.9 million distributed from the SEC office, as well as $18.3 million retained by institutions that participated in bowl games after the 2015 season to offset travel and other bowl-related expenses. The average amount distributed from the conference office, excluding bowl money retained by participants, was slightly more than $40.4 million per school.

"Each of our institutions sponsor from 16 to 22 intercollegiate athletics teams and offer their student-athletes in those sports the highest level of commitment to their athletics and academic experience," Sankey said in a release. "This distribution from the SEC helps our universities' athletics programs continue to fully support broad-based opportunities for thousands of female and male student-athletes in all sports."

The SEC's revenue was up sharply from $475.8 million and $32.7 million per school during the 2014-15 fiscal year.
