Gibby Gilbert III qualifies for U.S. Senior Open

Ooltewah's Gibby Gilbert III posted a 4-under 68 Monday to secure the second qualifying spot for the 2017 U.S. Senior Open. Battling the rain at St. Ives Country Club in Johns Creek (GA), Gilbert began his round on hole number 10 and had five birdies in his first nine holes. Stephen Keppler took medalist honors with a 5-under-par 67. The top three finishers claimed qualifying spots, along with two alternate positions, for the 38th U.S. Senior Open, which will be played at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass., June 29-July 2.

BASKETBALL

' Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball standout Jasmine Joyner has been named Tennessee's women's college basketball Player of the Year by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. Joyner earned Southern Conference defensive Player of the Year honors and was named Most Outstanding Player at the conference tournament, helping the Mocs claim the legaue championship. She finished third nationally averaging 3.8 blocked shots per game and was the only SoCon player to avearge a double-double (13.1 points, 10.5 rebounds).

' North Murray High School's J.T. Langford has signed scholarship papers to continue his career at Georgia Northwestern. Langford will join sevearl other area players who have signed with the Bobcats, including Tyler Phillips of Coahulla Creek and Bryce Waters of Sonoraville, as well as Tristen Bennett of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe and Davantae Kimble of Ringgold. Langford averaged 17 points and eight rebounds last season.
