Lee University senior catcher Nathan Wierzgac was selected to the All-Gulf South Conference baseball first team for 2017, and Flames senior pitchers Art Vidrio and Kit Larson made the second team. Vidrio also was a second-teamer last year. He was 4-4 with a 3.29 earned run average in 79 1/3 innings this season, when Larson had nine saves and a 2.55 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings. Wierzgac, meanwhile, batted .360 with 11 home runs, four doubles, 39 runs batted in, 39 runs scored and only 14 strikeouts in 172 plate appearances.
Golf
* The 13th-ranked Lee women's golf team is headed to the NCAA Division II Super South Regional next Monday through Wednesday at Elgin, S.C. It will be a 54-hole event with 12 teams at The Member's Club at Woodcreek, and the top three plus the three low scorers not on qualifying teams will advance to the national tournament May 17-20 in Findlay, Ohio. The Lady Flames won their first three tournaments of the spring semester and finished second in their last two, including the GSC tournament. "Our result at conference wasn't what we wanted, but I thought we learned some lessons that will have us that much more prepared for regionals," coach John Maupin said in a Lee release. "We can't wait to get up there and compete. ... Needless to say, we are very excited for this opportunity. We know how tough of a region this is, so it's certainly an accomplishment we are proud of."
* Coahulla Creek senior David Manis recently became the second official recruit for Georgia Northwestern's revived golf program, but new coach Eddie Jackson revealed that Manis was his first commitment and immediately went to work trying to persuade other prospective players to choose the Bobcats. "All of us are friends, so we're trying to keep it close and comfortable. We're just ready to get started," Manis said in a school release. "He's got a really good short game," Jackson said. Coahulla Creek coach Anthony Thomas called him "a worker. ... He wants to be a good golfer."
