Lee University basketball teams each 3-0 after sweeping visitors

Carrie Cheeks had 16 points, 14 rebounds and four steals Wednesday as the Lee University women's basketball team trounced Life 96-38 in Cleveland. The Lee men then topped Tusculum, 83-67.

Abby Bertram had 12 points and six assists, Erin Walsh scored 11 points and Shelby Brown and Maddie Long added 10 apiece for the Lady Flames (3-0). Lindsey Roddy made three steals.

For the Flames (3-0) against Tusculum, Ryan Montgomery scored 16 points, Cody Jones and Keaton Dotson scored 14 each and Levi Woods collected nine rebounds. Colton Blevins added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

» In Division III games, the Covenant women beat visiting Sewanee 59-50 in a season opener while the Covenant men lost 79-78 in overtime at Oglethorpe and the Sewanee men fell 80-70 at home to Emory & Henry.

Bekah Walter scored 18 points and Jessica Bell and Joanna Smith added 15 and 10 with eight and seven rebounds for Covenant's Lady Scots. Emma Grimes also had eight rebounds. For Sewanee, Hannah McCormack and Bella Taylor scored 17 points each, Allison Hitchcock had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Sue Kim had six assists.

The Scots lost a tough one in Neal Young's official debut as their head coach, but Berto Dryden had 21 points and four steals, Caleb Haynes and Bailey Spragg scored 12 points each and James Mitchell tallied 11. Haynes and Patjo Twagirayezu each had seven rebounds. Dryden missed a potential winning 3-point shot with three seconds left in overtime, after Covenant lost a 72-69 lead in the last five seconds of regulation.

Adrian Thomas scored 31 points in defeat for the Sewanee men, and Luke Smith had 17 points and six assists.

» Tuesday in Cleveland, Cleveland State's men won 77-74 after the women won 76-70 in Tuesday's junior college doubleheader against Wallace State-Hanceville.

Julia Gaither and Ebony Kelley contributed 20 points each with nine and seven rebounds and four and three steals for the Lady Cougars (3-2), and Jordan Smith had 14 points and matched Gaither's four assists. Tevin Olison scored 24 points with four 3s for the Cougars (4-2), while Victor Curry had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Domont'a' Wright also scored 14 points and Cam Copeland had six assists.

» Tuesday in Rossville, Jayla Stone scored 24 points to lead Georgia Northwestern's unbeaten Lady Bobcats to a 65-58 home win against Judson College. Christina DeSalvo scored 14 points, all in the first half, and Katy Phillips added 10 points and matched Madison Lewis with nine rebounds for GNTC (3-0).
