Around the Region: Tom Weathers being inducted into TFCA Hall of Fame

Former Red Bank High School football coach Tom Weathers is among six honorees to be inducted into the Tennessee Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the TSSAA BlueCross Bowl state championships on Saturday, Dec. 2. The other five to be inducted are Ensworth's Ricky Bowers, Stewarts Creek's David Martin, Knoxville Webb's David Meske, former Maryville High coach and current Furman assistant George Quarles and Lewis County's Bobby Sharp. Weathers was Red Bank's head coach from 1973 to 2001, winning the Class AAA state championship in 2000. He also coached at Dade County (2002-03) and Soddy-Daisy (2004-07), compiling a 248-131 overall record and guiding his teams to 16 playoff appearances. Red Bank had six 10-plus win seasons under Weathers, including three undefeated regular seasons.

* Sewanee freshman defensive back and kick returner William Phillips was voted the Southern Athletic Association football newcomer of the year for 2017, and he made the All-SAA second team. Tigers linebacker Lee Menefee and safety John Cleveland were first-team selections, and offensive lineman John Gaither from Cleveland was another second-teamer. Sewanee tight end James Hewell, defensive lineman Jo Jo Matlock and cornerback Wesley Porter received honorable mention. Phillips set a school record with 98-yard fumble return for a touchdown and also had a 66-yard punt return for a score. Menefee was second in the SAA with 95 tackles, 14 of them solo stops, and 8.5 were for lost yardage. Cleveland had six of the Tigers' 21 interceptions. Berry College quarterback Slade Dale from Ringgold also earned honorable mention.

Basketball

* Sewanee sophomore forward Adrian Thomas from Chattanooga and McCallie School was this season's inaugural SAA men's basketball player of the week for his 66 points and 70 percent shooting from the field in the Tigers' first three games. He also totaled 15 rebounds, including nine against Washington & Lee. He scored 31 points against Emory & Henry.

* The Georgia Northwestern women's basketball team improved to 5-0 for the season with a 74-60 road victory Monday against the Covenant junior varsity. And the Bobcats did it with a truly small lineup after losing a 13-point first-half lead and their 6-foot-3 center, Madison Lewis, to a leg injury when the score was 45-45. They already were playing without veteran point guard Katy Phillips, who was ill, but won with 22 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists from Tori Harvey, 21 points from Kayla Stone and 13 plus three steals from Taylor Bethune. Emily Goff scored 25 for Covenant, and Glory Blankenship added 17.

Swimming

* Trey Freeman of Baylor School and the Baylor Swim Club anchored a junior world-record performance with Team USA in the 4x50 mixed medley relay at the World Cup meet this past weekend in Singapore, where he also was on the bronze-medal mixed freestyle relay and individually was fourth in the 1500 short-course meter freestyle (15:06.13) and sixth in the 400 free (3:44.35). Team USA went to Singapore from the FINA World Cup in Tokyo, where Freeman was the first American and 12th overall in the 200-meter free.
