Around the Region: Roadrunners, Mocs wrap up at Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic

The Dalton State College men's golf team finished 12th and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was 13th in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic, which wrapped up Sunday at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga. Georgia Tech won the 15-team tournament on the first playoff hole after tying Alabama at 14-under-par 850 at the end of 54 holes. DSC, an NAIA program, finished at 880, with the Roadrunners' S.M. Lee leading with a 14th-place showing. He was at 2-under 214, nine strokes behind individual champion Alejandro Tosti of Florida. UTC improved its round every day, with Luke Long's 24th place the best individual finish for the Mocs. Tennessee tied Florida for fifth at 862, and Volunteers freshman Chase Roswall from Baylor School tied for 26th.

Soccer

* The UTC women lost 2-0 Georgia State on Sunday, falling behind in the 16th minute and giving up a second goal in the 63rd. The Panthers (2-4-2) finished with an 18-4 advantage on shots overall, including 10-1 on goal, to drop the Mocs to 2-4-1. UTC keeper Melia Correa made eight saves.

* The Lee women lost 1-0 in overtime to Embry-Riddle on Sunday in Gulf Shores, Ala. The Eagles (2-1) scored after 103 minutes of play, with Maria Schmiedhofer finding the net on an assist from Annie Gelnaw. Lee (2-2) finished with an advantage of 10-8 on shots, including 6-4 on goal, and Lady Flames keeper Haley Gribler made three saves.

* The Sewanee men beat Methodist 1-0 in overtime Sunday in Fayetteville, N.C., with Kyle Johnson's header the game-winning goal on an assist from Alpo Sipila. Will Merriman made three saves - including one in the 92nd minute - for Sewanee (3-2), which outshot Methodist (1-2-1) 11-8 overall and 9-4 on goal. Johnson now has three game-winning goals in 39 career matches with the Tigers.

* The Dalton State College soccer teams swept Oakwood (Huntsville, Ala.) in dominant fashion during a home doubleheader Sunday, with the men winning 11-2 and the women winning 11-1. Juan Zapata had three goals and Santiago Moore three assists for the DSC men (4-1), who took 18 shots on goal, while Akeila Raines had three goals and Brittany Jensen two for the DSC women (3-1-1).

Tennis

* UTC junior Sydney Patton was the runner-up in Flight 2 singles at the Austin Peay Fall Invitational tennis tournament this past weekend, and UTC also was second in both doubles draws and had junior Delaney Edwards as the third-place finisher in Flight 1 singles. Another Mocs junior, Mckenzie Barco, won three back-draw matches in straight sets in Flight 3 singles. UTC's doubles finalists were junior Caroline Hall and freshman Bogdana Zaporozhets in Flight 1 and Patton and sophomore Annie Tarwater in Flight 2. Zaporozhets and Tarwater had reached singles semifinals along with Edwards and Patton.

Field Hockey

* Ceara Caffrey scored twice and assisted on another goal and Hannah Tompkins added a pair of goals as Sewanee beat Oberlin 4-1 Sunday in Richmond, Ind. Jo Jo Young also had an assist for the Tigers (3-1), who led 3-0 before Oberlin (1-4) found the net in the 65th minute. Sewanee finished with a 16-3 advantage on shots.

Running

* Sewanee runner Tricia Murphy followed her season-opening victory in the Sewanee Invitational with a 10th-place finish of 20:29.49 in the 5-kilometer race Saturday morning at the UAH Chargers Cross Country Invitational in New Market, Ala., and Tigers teammates Anne Chapman Hayes and Elizabeth Haberstroh were 14th and 15th among 57 participants. The Sewanee women were third out of six teams, behind NCAA Division II members Alabama-Huntsville and West Alabama. In the men's 8k, the Tigers' Owen Legrone was 10th out of 74 runners in 27:24.20.
