University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer Megan Woods was one of the 10 Southern Conference graduate scholarship winners announced Thursday by the league. The scholarships are worth $2,000 each. Woods' specific award is the inaugural Milliken & Co. Scholarship. An accounting major with a 4.0 grade point average, she was the medalist in the 2016 SoCon tournament and has two top-10 finishes this year going into the Brickyard Collegiate starting Sunday at Macon, Ga. "It's a wonderful achievement," coach Colette Murray said in a UTC release. "We're very proud of her for all of her accomplishments and everthing she's done over her four years. I'm just very excited for her. Megan has such an exciting future ahead of her. I know she'll be wonderful at whatever road she takes."

Softball

' Covenant College senior catcher Shannon Schmitt was voted to the All-USA South and USAS All-West Division softball first teams announced Thursday, and freshman teammate Jada Allmon was a second-team All-West selection. Hannah Talley represented the Lady Scots (20-18) on the all-sportsmanship team for the second year in a row. They play today at LaGrange in a best-of-three series in the league tournament. Schmitt is batting .333 with a team-best .453 on-base percentage and team-most 17 RBIs. She has nine doubles, has scored 14 runs and has been hit by pitches a school-record 13 times. Shortstop Allmon is hitting .265 with a .337 OBP, 13 runs and 10 RBIs.

' Tennessee Wesleyan won 7-3 and lost 3-2 in its Appalachian Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Thursday at Brenau and now is 16-12, 9-5 in the league. Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton and Savannah Moore each was 2-for-4 in the first game for Brenau (18-11, 7-3), Payne with a double and a run scored, and Payne was 2-for-3 with a double and catcher Moore had a hit and her pinch runner scored in the Golden Tigers' win.

Baseball

» Despite trailing by five runs after half an inning, Tennessee Wesleyan began its AAC baseball home series against Bluefield with a 16-6 win Thursday. Tristan Clarke was 4-for-5 with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored and Sid Kumar was 3-for-5 with a homer, two doubles, four RBIs and three runs for TWU (22-16, 11-5), while Grant Lang was 1-for-2 with a homer, two walks and two runs, Dakota Phillips was 2-for-5 with a homer, Collin Ridout was 3-for-5 with an RBI, Alfred Cruz was 1-for-1 with a triple and two runs and Tyler Halas was 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.

Track & Field

» Lee University's Justin Brooks and Audrey Smith were the Gulf South track athletes of the week for their performances last weekend, and the Flames' Caleb Eagleson was the men's freshman of the week. Smith set a Lady Flames record in the 3000-meter steeplechase by almost four seconds at the Raleigh Relays, and her 10:44.22 time met the provisional standard for the NCAA Division II national meet. Brooks won the 400 at Raleigh with the best DII time in the nation this outdoor season, 47.07 seconds, and Eagleson ran the fastest DII South Region time so far in the 10k.

Volleyball

» Covenant has hired Brittney Berube as full-time assistant volleyball coach. She replaces Kristy Newman, the new head coach at Marietta College in Ohio. Berube played the 2006-08 seasons at Sam Houston State and then got into high school and high-level club coaching, the last three years with the Houston Volleyball Academy. "I am so excited about the opportunity to coach at Covenant under Joanna Ehman," she said in a release. "Discipleship and volleyball are two things I am very passionate about, and the ability to combine them in such a beautiful setting is truly a gift." Said Ehman: "Through the search and interview process, it was awesome to talk through how both of us could see the Lord's perfect timing in this for the Covenant volleyball program and for Brittney's aspirations as a coach."

Lacrosse

» The second-year Lee women's lacrosse team is 7-7 after losing 22-16 Thursday at Cumberlands (Ky.), which is 15-1. The score was tied at 10 before the Patriots scored five goals in a row. Emma Hill had four goals and two assists and Becca Broadwick, Madeline Perrigo and Brianne Schapira netted three goals each for Lee, Broadwick with two assists and nine draw controls and Perrigo with six ground balls. Hannah Rotello had two goals, an assist and eight draw controls.
