Softball Mocs win 5-4, lose 4-2 at first-place UNCG

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team continued its recent surge Saturday at UNC Greensboro, the Southern Conference leader.

UTC pulled out a 5-4 win in 10 innings, its seventh victory in a row, before falling 4-2 to the Spartans (37-9, 10-2).

In game one, Brook Womack scored the tying run in the fifth and singled in the tiebreaker in the 10th, giving Allison Swinford the pitching win for her two innings of relief of Celie Hudson. Devan Brown had an RBI single and Hayleigh Weissenbach a two-run single in the third for the Mocs (23-23, 7-5), and Aly Walker hit the double that scored Womack.

Brown was 2-for-3, Walker 2-for-4 and Weissenbach 2-for-5 in that game, and Emma Sturdivant was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Brown had an RBI single in game two, when Swinford (8-10) took the loss but gave up only six hits and two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

' Lee 11-7, West Georgia 6: At Cleveland, Tenn., the Lady Flames completed a sweep of the three-game Gulf South Conference series with a tying two-out three-run home run by Bailey Church in seventh inning of the finale and Taylor Moran's bases-loaded single in the ninth.

Kayla Louie was 2-for-3 and Moran and Stevie Baird each was 2-for-4 in that game for Lee (25-26, 13-17), and Erika Greek got the pitching win in relief after throwing a six-inning five-hitter in Saturday's first game. Abby McKinney was 3-for-3 with three doubles and four RBIs, Brooklynn Frazier was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, Moran was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs and Baird and Louie each was 2-for-3. Lily Hatcher scored two runs.

' Chattanooga State 3-5, Volunteer State 1-1: At Chattanooga State, the nationally 12th-ranked Lady Tigers rose to 46-8 and 29-1 in the TCCAA with the sweep. They've won 34 games in a row.

Morgan Marshall pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts in game one, when Madison Crabtree hit a two-run homer and Kaleigh Wynne was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Then Jenna Edwards threw a five-hitter with seven strikeouts, Wynne was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, Kiley Longmire was 1-for-2 with a homer and two walks and Alyssia Bowen was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Chattanooga State ends its regular season this Friday and Saturday at second-place Walters State.

' Cleveland State 2-8, Dyersburg State 1-5: At Cleveland State, the Lady Cougars followed their 6-0 and 8-5 TCCAA victories Friday over the Lady Eagles with their sixth and seventh straight wins overall, making the hosts 21-18 and 13-15 in the league. Saturday's first game went eight innings.

' Berry 10, Rhodes 1: At Warner Park, the NCAA Division III sixth-ranked Vikings breezed to their fourth consecutive Southern Athletic Association championship after edging No. 2 seed Birmingham-Southern in the winners-bracket final. Nine of their 12 hits against Rhodes went for extra bases, and Makenzie Flynt pitched a one-hitter.
