Golf Mocs first-day leaders in SoCon tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga took the first-day lead Sunday in the Southern Conference men's golf tournament at Pinehurst (N.C.) No. 9. The Mocs shot 290, two strokes better than three-time defending champion East Tennessee State, with Will Porter second individually at 70, Etienne Brault and Andrew Weathers sharing sixth at 73 and Lake Johnson tied for 11th at 74.

Softball

» UTC lost 4-0 in the rubber game Sunday of its SoCon softball series at first-place UNC Greensboro. The Spartans (38-9, 11-2) broke a tie with three unearned runs in the fifth inning. Devan Brown was 2-for-3 and Aly Walker 2-for-4 for the Mocs (23-24, 7-6).

Tennis

» Sewanee's tennis teams beat Millsaps in Southern Athletic Association tournament finals Sunday at Murfreesboro, 5-0 for the 11th-ranked women (21-4) and 5-1 for the 20th-ranked men (22-5). It was the sixth successive SAA tourney title for each Tigers team.

» No. 1 seed Reinhardt beat No. 2 seed Tennessee Wesleyan 5-0 for the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's tennis tournament championship Sunday at Baylor School.

» Sunday at McCallie School, top-seeded ETSU topped No. 3 seed Furman 4-2 for the Buccaneers' 11th SoCon men's tournament title and fourth in a row. Women's top seed Furman beat No. 2 seed ETSU 4-1.

Lacrosse

» The Sewanee men's lacrosse team won 14-12 in an SAA semifinal Sunday at No. 2 seed Berry. Henry Burns and Hayden Hunt each had five goals and two assists and Ryan Stubits collected 19 ground balls for the Tigers (10-6), who visit Rhodes on Saturday. Bryce Womack made 13 saves.

» Hannah Bellamah had five goals and three assists as Centre topped visiting Sewanee 13-8 in an SAA women's semifinal. Sarah Strand scored three goals, Preston Cooper had three assists and Amanda Jenkins had 15 saves for Sewanee (12-6). A senior leader for the Colonels (15-2) is Haden Gibbons from GPS, who scored the first goal Sunday and assisted on the next one.

Baseball

» Bryan College kept its share of first place in AAC baseball with 17-6 and 18-3 wins Saturday at Montreat. That was after a 13-0 victory Friday in which Stephen Chamblee struck out nine batters in his ninth win of the season and Wade Weinburger and Cody Young each homered and scored two runs, batting in four and two. In Saturday's first game Fernando Garcia was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs for the Lions (36-11, 19-5), while Weinburger homered and tripled, scored three runs and drove in three and Lake Burris and David Scoggins each homered, doubled and singled, Burris with five RBIs and Scoggins with three. Tyler Scott was 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI in the finale, when Scoggins hit a three-run homer, Garcia also had three RBIs and Weinburger and Rodney Tennie each had two hits with a homer, two RBIs and two runs. Trevor Behrent had five hits in the doubleheader.

» Tennessee Wesleyan fell to third at 18-6 in the AAC with an 8-7 loss after a 7-3 win Saturday at Point. The hosts scored five runs in their last at-bat. Malik Stephens was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Tristan Clarke had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and Aloysius Cruz drove in three in the win for TWU (31-18). Alfred Cruz and Stephens homered and Cruz matched Dakota Phillips with two hits and two RBIs in the loss.

Track & Field

» UTC's Haley Morris was fourth in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase at Auburn's War Eagle Invitational this past weekend, and Emily Poole was sixth in the 5000 run with Julia Henderson seventh in the 1500. Running unattached, UTC cross country men Mark Britt and Ryan Gebelein were fifth and sixth in the 1500.

» Sewanee's Ash Midyett in the men's 800 and Karagan Day in women's javelin were runners-up in the SAA meet, and Meredith Stuber set a school record with a fifth-place 26.22 in the 200. The Tigers were third in both 4x400 relays with Kelsie Schiavone, Elizabeth Shackelford, Tricia Murphy and Stuber setting another program record.
