Manker Patten Tennis Club teaching pro Wesley Cash and his United States team were successful, but Girls Preparatory School coach Sue Bartlett and her Great Britain team had their undefeated runs end Wednesday in the 60-over age groups of the ITF Seniors World Team Championships at Ulm, Germany. Cash and his partner won by default in doubles in the USA's 3-0 quarterfinal defeat of Italy in the men's Von Cramm Cup, after Mark Vines of Naples, Florida, and Maxime Buyckx of Atlanta won in singles. Vines was leading 4-1 when his opponent pulled a hamstring and had to retire, and Buyckx prevailed 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. In the women's Alice Marble Cup's top-four playoffs, No. 3 seed Great Britain lost 2-1 to No. 2 seed Australia with both losses in singles. Bartlett lost 6-1, 6-1 to Ros Balodis at No. 1. Cash's second-seeded team was to face third seed France in today's semifinals, with top-seeded Australia meeting No. 4 seed Germany.

* Covenant College was picked by USA South coaches to tie for second in the men's soccer West Division standings and to finish third in the women's West, the conference revealed Wednesday. Defending division champion Maryville was voted to finish first in both, under 28th-year coach Pepe Fernandez - a Tennessee Wesleyan Hall of Fame member who coached at Hixson and Notre Dame high schools before going to Maryville. Actually, the Maryville women tied Piedmont for first in their nine-team divisional balloting but got one more first-place vote (five to four). Covenant's Lady Scots under 25th-year coach Mark Duble had a substantial edge on fourth-place Brevard. Brevard tied Scott Bosgraf's Covenant men for second, one point ahead of Piedmont. North Carolina Wesleyan's men edged Greensboro in the East voting, and Methodist, Salem and Meredith were a tight one-two-three in the women's poll.
