Area sports notes: UTC announces men's tennis schedule

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team is scheduled to play 15 home matches in the spring 2019 semester, beginning with Feb. 1 and 2 visits from North Alabama and Austin Peay and a Feb. 9 date with Belmont. Before that, coach Chuck Merzbacher's Mocs will play at Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 16, at Alabama on Jan. 19 and at Presbyterian on Jan. 27. Nonconference home doubleheaders are set for Feb. 17 against North Dakota and Lee and Feb. 23 against USC Upstate and Carson-Newman, and UTC also will host Tennessee Tech on March 2, Kennesaw State on March 6, Alabama A&M on March 8 and Jacksonville State on March 9. The Mocs finish nonconference play and begin Southern Conference competition March 14 and 17 at College of Charleston and The Citadel and host Furman, Mercer, Wofford and East Tennessee State in SoCon matches March 23, 24, 30 and 31. The SoCon tournament will run April 18-20 in Macon.

Basketball

' Luke Smith scored 27 points with six 3-point baskets and Jordan Warlick had 22 points and five assists as the Sewanee men's basketball team improved to 8-1 with a 103-71 nonconference win Friday night at Johnson University Tennessee. Warlick was 8-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-7 on 3s, and Cam Caldwell and Matt Lee added 13 and 10 points, Caldwell with seven rebounds. Ryan Starr had six assists and three steals for the Tigers.

' Donald Green had 27 points and 11 rebounds as Chattanooga State defeated visiting Volunteer State 95-77 in TCCAA men's basketball Friday. Also for the Tigers (6-3, 3-2), Quatarius York had 13 points and seven rebounds, Joshua Conrad and Richard Nunez scored 12 and 11 points and A.J. Morris and Lorenzo Ferrell had nine and six assists. Green was 5-of-5 and Conrad 4-of-5 on 3s.

' Delaine Walker scored 17 points and Maurice Dickson and Johnathon King added 13 each, but their Cleveland State men's team lost 77-72 to visiting Motlow State in TCCAA play. That dropped the Cougars to 3-8, 1-4. Motlow won the women's game 73-57, but Hannah Phillips had 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots and Britnay Gore contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Cougars (2-8, 1-3). Jordan Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds.

' Even with top scorers Tori Harvey and Abby Dalton sitting out part of the second half with foul trouble, the Georgia Northwestern Lady Bobcats defeated Oakwood 73-66 Friday. That earned them a spot in the championship game tonight of their Holiday Bash at the Rossville Athletic Center. Dalton scored 27 points and Harvey had 17, 14 in the first half, while Gracen Hobbs had 12 points and seven rebounds and Jerriale Jackson collected 16 rebounds for GNTC (3-6). Doroteya Jackson and Ty Rogers each scored 17 for Oakwood.

' The Georgia Northwestern men lost 74-63 at home Thursday to the Covenant junior varsity, which got 20 points with four 3s from Ryan Rhodes, 14 points with three 3s from Ryan Gilbert and 12 points from Luke Tidmore. For the Bobcats (2-4), Trion graduates Jayce Harris and Jarret Gill scored 17 and 13 points and combined for 15 rebounds.
