Lee University opened its baseball season Saturday with 6-1 and 5-0 victories against visiting Tuskegee. Eric Freeman, a senior transfer from the University of Tennessee, gave up three hits and struck out eight in five innings in the first game, and Wes Albert struck out another eight while allowing one hit in the last four innings. Pat Morrow then struck out 10 in six innings in game two, when Spencer Mossburg had a two-run double and an RBI sacrifice bunt and Tyler Payne and Peyton Meeker also had RBIs. Meeker had a two-run double and scored in game one, when Justen Freeman - Eric's brother - Dalton Ney and Brayden Ware also had RBI hits, Mossburg scored twice and freshman Thomas Zazzaro stole home as a pinch runner.

-Bryan College repeated its season-opening NAIA baseball sweep Friday of Rio Grande and 18th-ranked Northwestern Ohio with a 10-4 defeat of Northwestern Ohio and a 10-8 win over Rio Grande on Saturday in Dayton. The Lions' Stephen Chamblee pitched all seven innings in Friday's 3-2 win and allowed three hits while striking out nine Rio batters, and Lake Burris was 3-for-3 with a two-run home run while Tyler Scott was 2-for-3 with the other RBI. In Friday's 8-3 win over UNOH, Luke Henderson was the winning pitcher and Wade Weinburger tripled and joined Tucker Cain in going 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

-Covenant College began its baseball season with 5-4 and 4-0 losses Saturday at Oglethorpe. The Scots lost on a wild pitch in the opener and were no-hit by four pitchers in game two. Tyler Moore was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Caleb Bloye was 2-for-3 and Donny Lewis scored twice in game one.

-Sewanee followed its 13-5 season-opening baseball win Friday at LaGrange with 5-4 and 6-0 losses Saturday to the 10th-ranked team in NCAA Division III. Trey Akins was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Chris McNulty and Drew Mancuso each was 2-for-5 also for Sewanee in Saturday's first game, McNulty with an RBI and a run scored. Akins and Braxton Swanson each was 2-for-4 in the finale.

Softball

-Lee University dropped to 1-3 in the season-opening softball tournament at Gulf Shores, Ala., with two losses Saturday: 8-5 to Rollins and 6-2 to Spring Hill. Stevie Baird was 1-for-2 with two runs scored against Rollins, and Brooklynn Frazier was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs while Leigh Beatenbough was 2-for-3 with an RBI against Spring Hill.

-Covenant lost 5-1 to Greenville (Ill.) and 6-3 to host Rhodes in softball Saturday at Memphis. Against Greenville, Shade Epes was 1-for-2 with a bunt hit, a steal of third and the run scored on a Madyson Gibbins sacrifice bunt. Against Rhodes, Casey Grover was 1-for-2 with a home run, Shelby Ralston was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Faith Manning was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Tennis

-On her 19th birthday, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Emma Van Hee won at No. 6 singles, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-7, although her women's tennis team lost 6-1 Saturday at 8-0 Alabama.

Track & Field

-UTC's Sophia Neglia, Emily Poole, Hannah Caldwell and Rebekah Wich finished second, third, fifth and eighth in the women's 3000-meter run at the ETSU Buccaneer Invitational track and field meet Saturday, and the Mocs' Abby Bateman was sixth in the 800 with Haley Morris and Brianna Nelson eighth and 11th in the mile run. UTC's Ryan Gebelein and Mark Britt were sixth and 11th in the men's 3000, and Gavin Hasty was 10th in the 800.

Football

-The new Peach State Cats of the American Arena League have signed former Middle Tennessee State defensive back Xavier Walker for the team that will play its home games at the Dalton Convention Center. The first of those is set for March 24 at 4 p.m. against the Carolina Cowboys. The AAL's 16 teams include two others in Georgia, the Atlanta Havoc and the Macon-based Georgia Doom, according to a release from Cats general manager Tim Freeman. Walker, who was all-county and a Gwinnett Super 6 selection at Duluth (Ga.) High School, went to a New York Giants rookie mini-camp and spent time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2016.

General

-The Chattanooga Quarterback Club will be back at its regular home, the Stadium Club at Finley Stadium, for its noon luncheon meeting Monday, and as always the public is invited. The speakers will be general manager Sean McDaniel and coach Bill Elliott from the Chattanooga Football Club. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without.
