Area Sports Notes: Lady Flames stretch win streak to eight games

The Lee University women's basketball team set up a Gulf South Conference showdown Saturday at Union University, ranked 12th in NCAA Division II, with its eighth victory in a row Thursday, 60-48 at Christian Brothers in Memphis. CBU won the men's game 78-63. The Lady Flames (17-3, 10-2) trailed at halftime but outscored CBU 19-12 in the third quarter and 20-12 in the fourth. Carrie Cheeks and Abby Bertram each scored 14 points, and Erin Walsh added 13 with four assists. Jason Landman led the Flames with 21 points and eight rebounds, and Michael McGuirk and Chase Cullen scored 14 and 11 points.

» Dalton State's men improved to 16-4 and 9-1 in the Southern States with a 74-66 home win over Bethel. Carnilious Simmons had 19 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots in the 13th-ranked Roadrunners' sixth straight victory, while Reed Dungan scored 18 points and Aaron Burress had 14 rebounds with 12 points.

» Tori Harvey and Madison Lewis had 23 and 18 points and 18 and 17 rebounds as the Georgia Northwestern women won 60-56 at Judson College on Monday. That ended a four-game losing streak for the Lady Bobcats (8-5).

Fishing

» Michael Neal of Dayton, Tenn., was in sixth place after the first day of the FLW Tour bass tournament on Lake Okeechobee in Florida. He weighed a five-fish limit totaling 21 pounds Thursday. Bryan Schmitt of Maryland led with 24 pounds, 11 ounces, with Mark Rose from Arkansas second at 24-0.

» The Bryan College duo of Thad Simerly and Ethan Shaw were seventh out of 248 teams in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series event at Toledo Bend Reservoir in Louisiana after Thursday's first round with 16 pounds, 4 ounces, and teammates Nathan Bell and Cole Sands were tied for 24th with 13-10. Louisiana-Monroe's Tyler Craig and Spencer Lambert led with 20-13. The field will be cut to 30 boats after today's round.
