Area Sports Notes: Wesley Cash wins another tennis doubles national title

Chattanooga's Wesley Cash has teamed with Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., for numerous age-group titles at the highest level of the U.S. Tennis Association, and Friday they completed a national championship run at the next level down - a super category 2 event in Naples. The top seeds in the Men's 60-over age division, Cash and Naples beat No. 2 seeds Chris Bussert of Decatur, Ga., and Jeff Winkler of St. Petersburg, Fla., 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. That followed a 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinal victory over Robert Graham of Tampa and Daniel Simos of Clarkburg, Md., and a 6-3, 6-2 semifinal defeat of No. 4 seeds Stuart Chase of Charlotte and Scott Shepard of Nashville.

Fishing

-Michael Neal of Dayton, Tenn., and former Ooltewah resident Jay Kendrick of Grant, Ala., made the top 30 going back out on Lake Okeechobee, Fla., today for the semifinal round of the FLW Tour's opening bass tournament of the year. Neal was in 18th place after two days with 33 pounds, 1 ounce for 10 keepers, which had him just 14 ounces out of 11th and two pounds out of ninth. Kendrick was 22nd at 30-10. Bryan Schmitt of Maryland and Mark Rose of Arkansas remained the top two after Friday's round at 48-3 and 47-5. Casey O'Donnell of Langston, Ala., finished 21st among the co-anglers at 21-0.

-Bryan College's Thad Simerly and Ethan Shaw are among the 30 teams, from originally 248, remaining in competition today in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Tour event on Toledo Bend Reservoir in Louisiana. Their two-day total was 27 pounds, 7 ounces, good for 22nd place. The leaders from Wisconsin-Platteville totaled 41-6 Thursday and Friday. Bryan's Nathan Bell and Cole Sands wound up 41st at 24-4.

Basketball

-Joanna Smith scored a career-high 30 points to lead Covenant past visiting Agnes Scott, 81-65, in USA South women's basketball Friday night. Smith shot 12-of-17 from the field and 5-of-6 on free throws for the Lady Scots, who got 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting (4-of-4 on 3-pointers) from Taylor Robinson and 10 points, five assists and three steals from Jessica Bell.

-The Covenant men lost 91-75 in their USA South game at LaGrange, but Caleb Haynes scored 19 points in defeat. Bailey Spragg contributed 14 points and three steals and Berto Dryden had 13 points and nine rebounds. Travis Thompson and Alex Bonner had 22 and 20 points and eight and seven rebounds for LaGrange.

-Sue Kim led four Sewanee women's players with 12 or more points as the Tigers upset visiting Rhodes 72-64 in Southern Athletic Association basketball Friday. Kim was 4-of-6 on 3s in scoring 19 points, and Bella Taylor had 16 plus four assists and six rebounds. Hannah McCormack added 15 points and eight rebounds and Allison Hitchcock scored 12 points for Sewanee (7-11, 2-6). Alyssa Owens had 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Rhodes (12-6, 5-3).

-Sewanee also won the men's game against the Memphis school, 99-96, as Adrian Thomas from McCallie School had 32 points and 13 rebounds in leading six double-figure scorers. He was 12-of-17 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. Sean McDonough had 19 points with four 3s for the Tigers, and Matt Lee, Luke Smith, Hunter Buescher and Cam Caldwell added 13, 12, 11 and 10 points. Caldwell also had 10 rebounds, and Smith delivered nine assists. Anesu Nyawata led the Lynx with 17 points.

Swimming

-Jon Lancaster from the Baylor Swim Club and Heritage High School in Ringgold was among the Carson-Newman men's swimmers who swept the individual wins in a 159-31 team victory Friday against visiting King University. Lancaster won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.51. Carson-Newman also won the women's meet, 166-34, but King's Jess Vargo from Signal Mountain was second in the 200 backstroke.
