Area Sports Notes: Sewanee men hold on to share of SAA basketball lead

Host Sewanee split a Southern Athletic Association basketball doubleheader against Hendrix on Sunday, with the Tigers winning the men's game 77-56 after losing the women's game 91-73. The Sewanee men (11-8, 7-2), who held on to their share of first place in the SAA alongside Centre and Oglethorpe, were led by a double-double from McCallie School graduate Adrian Thomas (19 points, 17 rebounds). Luke Smith chipped in 17 points and Hunter Buescher 16 for the Tigers, who were up 41-27 midway, while Kam Brasfield led Hendrix (4-16, 2-7) with 20 points. In the women's game, Sewanee led 20-19 after a quarter but was down 47-33 at halftime and 68-52 entering the final period. Bella Taylor paced the Tigers (7-12, 2-7) by scoring 24 points with seven rebounds and three assists, Hannah McCormack added 18 points and nine rebounds and Allison Hitchcock had 14 points with four blocks. For Hendrix (15-5, 7-2), Leah Smith came off the bench to score 25 points in 23 minutes, shooting 8-for 16 from the field, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Vinessa Daniel added 20 points for the Warriors, and two of her teammates had double-doubles: Madison Martin (20 points, 16 rebounds) and Heather Prowse (11 points, 10 rebounds).

» Tennessee Wesleyan topped Columbia (S.C.) College 66-59 in Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball Saturday, keeping the Lady Bulldogs (15-5, 14-3) a half-game behind first-place Bryan. Hunter Simpson had 16 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals in their sixth consecutive win, and Kenzie Conn and Madison Walkup had 12 and 10 points and seven and 11 rebounds. Gina Dick added four assists.

» The Cleveland State women's team won 53-41 at Jackson State and 74-65 at Columbia State this past weekend, rising to 11-7 overall and 6-5 in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association competition. Abby Hubert scored 21 points with four 3-point baskets for the Lady Cougars at Jackson State and scored 25 at Columbia, where Julia Gaither had 17 plus six assists and four steals, Keya Jenkins had 15 points and eight rebounds and Ebony Kelley scored 14 points. Cleveland State's men won 77-67 at Jackson, where Victor Curry had 18 rebounds with 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 9-of-9 from the free-throw line and Cam Copeland had 20 points and five assists. Delaino Walker and Tevin Olison scored 12 points each, Walker with seven rebounds and Olison with five assists. The Cougars (10-8, 6-5) lost 87-58 at Columbia, with Josh Parker's 18 points and Copeland's 10 leading them.

» Chattanooga State's Lady Tigers won 70-45 at Columbia State on Friday.

Tennis

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team won 5-2 at Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon but lost 6-1 to Abilene Christian at Hardin, Ky., that night. In Clarksville, Tenn., the Mocs (2-3) won the doubles point with victories by Niklas Gerdes/Michael Birnbaum and Jacob Marshall/Cooper Long, and Gerdes, Pablo Llebeili, Luke Plaisted and Long won in singles. Marshall got the UTC point against Abilene at No. 4 singles, and Llebeili and Plaisted won their doubles match.

Swimming

» Sewanee's swimming and diving teams both edged visiting Birmingham-Southern on Friday in the Tigers' last regular-season meet, 121-116 in the women's competition and 112-111 in the men's. For the Sewanee women, Meghan Mulhern won the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle events, Kate del Balzo won the 100 butterfly, Olivia Baker and Adelle Dennis were one-two in the 100 breaststroke and Noel Whitlock and Paisley Simmons were first and second in both 1- and 3-meter diving. Freshman James Hoyt set a Sewanee record of 10 minutes, 3.67 seconds while winning the men's 1000 free and also won the 500, Lee Haber won the 100 breast and the 400 individual medley, Jed Henrichsen won both diving events and Carl Failing won the 100 fly and joined Kipling Klimas, Andrew Freibert and Robert Coles in winning the 200 medley relay.
