Area sports notes: UTC's Etienne Brault set for U.S. Amateur

In a summer of success for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team, including local high school graduates Oliver Simonsen winning the Tennessee Match Play and Lake Johnson finishing third in the prestigious Chattanooga Choo Choo Invitational in back-to-back weeks at Council Fire, Etienne Brault qualified last week for the 2018 U.S. Amateur tournament Aug. 13-19 at Pebble Beach in California. The UTC senior from Quebec overcame five bogeys in his first eight holes for a 36-hole 138 and the second of two qualifying spots from Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison, New York. He had a 5-under-par 66 for his second round. Mocs redshirt freshman Dominic Jones has had three top-five finishes in Europe - two of those in pro events - and tied for low amateur in the Niitvalja tournament in Estonia, where sophomore teammate A.J. Lintunen finished 18th. Lintunen tied for 21st with a 72-hole 287 in the Finnish Stroke Play Championship. UTC junior Will Porter's three top-10s included a third-place 285, two strokes out of first, in the Boyd Quaich Memorial at St. Andrews in Scotland. He tied for sixth with a 283 in the East of Scotland Championship and tied for 10th as the only amateur to make the cut in the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters.

' Boyd-Buchanan won the boys' and girls' titles Monday in Bradley Central's invitational high school golf tournament at Cleveland Country Club. The male Buccaneers - with an all-senior lineup of Riley Barnes, Cameron Baubach, Bowman Blocker, Trent Cooper, Riley Covington and Hayes Wood - totaled 315 with their four best scores, edging the host Bears by three in the 10-team event. The Lady Bucs' Zacori Hill was the girls' medalist with an 80 and combined with Lydia Campbell for a 165, 10 shots ahead of runner-up Cleveland. Walker Valley's Dalton Sutton was the boys' medalist with a 72.

Field Hockey

' The Sewanee field hockey team is scheduled for nine home matches this season, which begins Sept. 1-2 with visits from Ohio Wesleyan and Eastern Mennonite with Transylvania also taking part. Coach Laura "Mac" McIntyre's Tigers will play Wittenberg at Rhodes in Memphis on Sept. 9 and Massachusetts schools Becker and Elms in Boston on Sept. 14-15. Sewanee will host Converse on Sept. 22 and Bridgewater on Sept. 23. After a Sept. 30 game at DePauw, the Tigers will be at home for five of their seven October contests: against Rhodes in the Southern Athletic Association opener on Oct. 6, Hendrix on Oct. 7, Transylvania on Oct. 14, Roanoke on Oct. 15 and Concordia (Wisconsin) on Oct. 27. The SAA tournament is set for Nov. 2-4 at Conway, Arkansas.
