Area Sports Notes: Sewanee's Adrian Thomas makes South Region all-district first team

Sewanee sophomore forward Adrian Thomas from Chattanooga and McCallie School was announced Monday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as a Division III South Region all-district first-team player. Thomas, the Southern Athletic Association player of the year, averaged 18.4 points and a league-high 9.6 rebounds a game and shot 57.1 percent from the field as the Tigers finished second in the SAA.

Golf

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golfers finished seventh out of 18 teams with a 36-hole 602 Monday in the Southern Intercollegiate tournament at the Athens (Ga.) Country Club. Arkansas won with a 567, 17 strokes ahead of co-runners-up Kennesaw State and Georgia. Individually, UTC's Lake Johnson tied for 16th at 147, Etienne Brault tied for 20th at 148 and Andrew Weathers tied for 36th at 152.

» The Sewanee men's golf team moved up a spot to 11th in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek coaches' poll for NCAA Division III.

Baseball

» Bryan College senior Fernando Garcia three-peated as the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball player of the week, and junior teammate Stephen Chamblee repeated as pitcher of the week. Garcia is batting .500 with an .878 slugging percentage for the season after hitting .467 with three home runs, three doubles, nine RBIs and five runs scored in the 3-1 week for the NAIA's 11th-ranked Lions. He had multiple hits in three of the games and has 41 for the season, with seven homers, 10 doubles, 32 runs and 28 RBIs. Chamblee threw a complete-game shutout for the second weekend in a row, this time with 13 strikeouts and only four hits and one walk allowed against Bluefield. That was his third game of 2018 with 13 strikeouts, and he's 5-0 with a 2.77 earned run average for 39 innings.

Lacrosse

» The Sewanee women's lacrosse team lost 14-13 to Transylvania on Sunday and 9-7 to Illinois Wesleyan on Monday, but midfielder Kit Sommi was named the SAA defensive player of the week for totaling 12 draw controls, forcing eight turnovers and collecting 13 ground balls in the three matches before Monday's. She also scored four goals in those three, which began with two wins by a combined margin of 32-5. Preston Cooper and Anna Comer each had two goals and Brianna Young made nine saves Monday for the Tigers (6-3). Sunday, Mary Kate Myers had three goals and an assist.

» The Sewanee's men team lost 22-13 to visiting Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday, after trailing 15-0 early in the second half. Daniel Burnum had three goals, an assist and eight ground balls in defeat, while Hayden Hunt also scored three goals and Jake Vaughn had two goals, an assist and four caused turnovers for the Tigers (3-3).

Softball

» Sewanee freshman Jackie O'Reilly was chosen the SAA softball player of the week after going 8-for-16 with a .529 on-base percentage, three home runs, seven RBIs and five runs scored and pitching 22 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts. In a 4-3 win over Centre, O'Reilly pitched all seven innings and went 4-for-4 with a homer, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, including the game-winner.

Track & Field

» Dalton State freshmen Sarah Sullivan and Kay Vradenburgh set program records by finishing fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase and sixth in the 10,000, respectively, at the Tiger Orange and Blue Classic track and field meet Saturday at Savannah, Ga. DSC's Nayeli Jacobo was fifth and Noor Sabeeh seventh in the 1500, Nayeli was sixth in the 800, Ana Karen Padilla was seventh in the 5000 and Haley Hight was eighth in the 10k.

Tennis

» The Chattanooga Tennis Association is putting out a call for more volunteers to help with the DecoTurf high school tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Champions Club, Baylor, McCallie, GPS, Brainerd and Warner Park courts.
