Softball Mocs split one-run games in Clearwater

With Brook Womack going 4-for-6 with a home run and an RBI single, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team rallied to edge Army 6-5 and then lost 4-3 to Elon in the USF Invitational tournament Saturday in Clearwater, Fla.

Womack has batted .575 (19-for-33) with two homers, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored in her last 10 games.

UTC (14-16) overcame a 5-0 deficit with a six-run sixth inning against Army (7-14), and Paige Peterson got her first college pitching win in relief with Allison Swinford registering a save. Emma Sturdivant and Katie Corum sandwiched two-run hits around Womack's RBI single in the sixth, and J.J. Hamill and Womack each was 2-for-3 in the game.

Swinford pitched a complete game against Elon (14-11), which scored two unearned runs in the third inning for a 3-1 lead and made it 4-2 in the sixth. The Mocs had nine hits in defeat, with Womack homering and singling and Hayleigh Weissenbach adding a double and a single.

-Union University 8-2, Lee 7-22: At Jackson, Tenn., the visiting Lady Flames bounced back from the one-run Gulf South Conference loss with a runaway win featuring a 14-run fifth inning.

In that second game for Lee (14-15, 6-8), Brooklynn Frazier was 4-for-6 with a homer, a double, six runs batted in and three scored and Stevie Baird was 3-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and four runs, Lily Hatcher was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, Leigh Beatenbough was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, Zoe Miller and Kayla Gooch each had two hits and scored twice, Taylor Moran was 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI, Caroline Freiling was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Abby McKinney scored three runs. Shonna Penney was the winning pitcher.

Moran was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Beatenbough was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the Lee loss.

-Chattanooga State 12-8, Cleveland State 4-7: At Chattanooga State, the host Lady Tigers finished the weekend TCCAA sweep after winning 4-0 and 6-4 on Friday.

Kaleigh Wynne pitched a three-hitter in the Friday shutout, when Kiley Longmire tripled and doubled and Madison Tidmore also went 2-for-4 and Longmire and Madison Crabtree had RBIs for Chattanooga State (22-8). Emily Yell was 2-for-3 for the Lady Cougars (10-13, 2-10), and pitcher Shiann Stockwell allowed only one earned run.

Grayson Brown and Cortney Mooneyham homered as Cleveland State took a 4-0 lead in Saturday's first game, but the Lady Tigers were helped by six errors in scoring 12 unanswered runs.

-Covenant 2-8, Brevard 1-2: On Lookout Mountain, the host Lady Scots won both games as Sarah Huskey pitched a three-hitter and Carsyn Stone, Tyler Epes and Joni Johnson combined on a five-hitter.

In the first game Madyson Gibbins was 2-for-2 and scored a run and Shade Epes and Erika Mast each was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Covenant (14-16). Brittan Miller homered for Brevard (5-5). Shade Epes was 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs in game two, when Shannon Schmitt, Shelby Ralston and Jada Allmon each scored twice and Mast, Kirsten Aanensen and Faith Manning each had an RBI.
