Lee University volleyball coach Andrea Hudson announced Wednesday the hiring of former Fresno State All-American Kristen Michaelis as assistant coach. A former head coach at Saint Claire Community College in Michigan, she has been a UTC assistant the past two years. She was a libero on the United States team that earned a bronze medal in the 2007 Pan American Games. "Kristen was already a resident of Cleveland but working with the UTC program," Hudson said in a release, noting a quick need to fill the position. "To find someone of her talent level and also a right fit for the mission of Lee University does not happen accidentally. We truly feel God had a hand in this."

Baseball

» Ninth-ranked Bryan College won 10-8 in NAIA baseball Wednesday at Martin Methodist. In Bryan's 10-0 home win over Hiwassee on Tuesday, Miguel Lopez and Zane Glass combined on a seven-inning one-hitter and Tyler Scott and David Scoggins homered, Scott batting in four runs. Wade Weinburger was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Jacob Justice was 2-for-2 with two runs and Rodney Tennie and Fernando Garcia each doubled and singled and drove in a run for the Lions (27-5). Wednesday in Pulaski, Weinburger, Cody Young and Lake Burris homered, Young and Burris each with three hits and three RBIs, and Garcia was 4-for-6 with three runs.

» Tennessee Wesleyan lost 5-4 and 4-1 Tuesday at Cumberlands. Braden Mosley was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Aloysius Cruz was 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in the first game for TWU (17-16), and Cruz was 1-for-2 and homered again in game two. The Patriots are 26-3.

Softball

» The funeral service for longtime slowpitch standout Sylvia White is scheduled for today at 11 a.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, and visitation with the family will begin at 10. The Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame member died Monday at age 85. She made her mark in several sports but was best known for playing softball in six decades. She starred locally for the DuPont Nylons and for 15 years for Boat Mart before managing a Gastonia, N.C., team that won a state championship.

» Tennessee Wesleyan defeated visiting St. Andrews 2-1 and 13-8 in Appalachian Athletic Conference softball Tuesday. Rachel Mathews pitched a five-hitter in the first game for TWU (12-10, 6-4), when Olivia Housewright was 2-for-4, scored in the sixth inning and singled in Laken Collier for the winning run in the seventh. Collier homered in game two, when Courtney Black was 4-for-4 with a triple, a double and six RBIs, Mackenzie Jackson and Housewright each was 3-for-4 and scored twice, Baylee Sutton was 2-for-3 and scored three runs and Allee West drove in three.

» Bryan lost 3-2 in eight innings and won 11-3 in its AAC doubleheader Tuesday at Union College. Olivia Johnson was the tough-luck losing pitcher in game one, when Sydney Olander was 3-for-4 with a double and one of the runs for Bryan (9-23, 6-6), while Kayla Hayes had a pinch-hit RBI double and Courtney Bonaiuto was 1-for-2 with the other RBI. Courtney Petty was 2-for-4 in each game. In the Lady Lions' win, Leslie Beecham was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, four RBIs and three runs, Hayes was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two scores and Olander had two RBIs.

» Sewanee lost 14-3 and 12-5 to visiting Wesleyan of Macon, Ga., in Division III softball Tuesday, but Charlsey Shirey was 1-for-2 with a three-run homer for the Lady Tigers (4-21) in the first game. Jackie O'Reilly was 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored in game two, and Taylor Wagner was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.

Lacrosse

» Hayley Bartlett scored four goals and Maddie Peek and Kendra Parenteau each had three plus an assist as Young Harris (7-5, 5-0) won 19-3 in Gulf South Conference women's lacrosse Wednesday at Lee. Becca Broadwick scored one goal and assisted on the other two for Lee (7-6, 2-4), by Madeline Perrigo and Hanah Rotello. Christa Hill made 13 saves in defeat.
