CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Chattanooga athletic director Mark Wharton has received a one-year contract extension.

Chancellor Steven Angle announced the extension Tuesday. With the extension, Wharton's contract now runs through the end of the 2022-23 school year.

Wharton said in a statement that "Chattanooga is a wonderful place, and I want to be a part of it for years to come."

Chattanooga hired Wharton in August. He replaced David Blackburn, who had been Chattanooga's athletic director for four years.

Wharton spent four years as Penn State's associate athletics director for development before coming to Chattanooga. He also has worked at East Carolina from 1996-2000 and 2006-13. He also had stints at James Madison (2000-03), UNC Asheville (2003-04) and UNLV (2004-06).
