Area Sports Notes: Sewanee women's tennis team loses to No. 1 Emory in D-III tourney

The Sewanee women's tennis team ended its season with a 5-0 loss to top-ranked Emory in an NCAA Division III regional final Sunday. The host Tigers, ranked 12th, finished 22-5 after advancing to the third round of the D-III postseason for the third time in four years. They improved their wins total by three over 2017, when they reached the second round. Emory (15-4) advances to the quarterfinals.

» Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., won their Men's 60s doubles semifinal 6-4, 6-1 in the ASI tennis tournament Saturday in Atlanta, but Vines injured his calf in the last game and had to default the doubles final and his singles final Sunday.

» The Lee University men's 4x400-meter relay team took advantage Saturday of a last chance to qualify for the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field meet. Derek Flatford, Harold Smith, Justin Brooks and Josiah Brooks broke a Lee record that included Smith and the Brooks twins and provisionally qualified with a 3:12.06 time at the Falcon Finale at Montevallo, Ala. "Their time is ranked No. 13 nationally," coach Caleb Morgan said in a Lee release. "They take 14 relay teams to nationals, so we will have to wait to see if it holds up." A week earlier in the Tennessee Challenge in Knoxville, the Flames' Thomas Kelton met the provisional standard in the 3000 steeplechase, and Justin Brooks in the 400 and Audrey Smith in the women's steeplechase improved their provisional times. Saturday night at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Smith beat the provisional requirement in the women's 5000 by nearly 24 seconds in 16:50.73, breaking her old Lady Flames record by 27 seconds. National meet selections will be posted Tuesday evening.

» Winning eight events and finishing second in four, Cleveland High School raced to a 48-point victory in the boys' part of the TSSAA Class Large Section 2 meet Saturday at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro. With wins in all four relays and two individual firsts and a second from Keegan Jones, the Blue Raiders totaled 126 points to 78 for runner-up Riverdale. Cleveland's Eric Parker and Benjedi Casseus were first and second in the 110-meter hurdles, and Casseus won the 300 hurdles. Bradley Central was fifth with Gunnar Olson winning the high jump and Gage Mathews taking the pole vault title, Red Bank was seventh with Cole Bullock winning the 1600- and 3200-meter runs and Ooltewah got a 400 victory from Ka'Saud Featherstone. Blackman led a Murfreesboro sweep of the top three girls' team totals, but Franklin County was fourth with three sprint victories from Ashtin Holman, and Soddy-Daisy, Rhea County and Cleveland were fifth through seventh out of 27 teams. Cleveland's Tiyanna Johnson tied Holman for first in the 100 and was second to her in the 200, and Paige Manney of McMinn County had four top-four finishes, including a first in the 100 hurdles and a second to Franklin County's Gracie Morse in the 300 hurdles. Ooltewah's Krystal Starling won the shot put and was second to Soddy-Daisy's Mattie Thomas in discus, Bradley's Madison Cantrell won the pole vault with Red Bank's Clarissa Oliva second, pentathlon winner Kelsey Henderson from Soddy-Daisy was second in the 100 hurdles and the triple jump and Rhea got seconds from Sarah Welch in the 800 and Lesley Green in the 3200. Red Bank in the 4x100 and Walker Valley in the 4x800 had girls' relay runners-up.

» Former East Ridge High School standout and University of Memphis (then Memphis State) All-America sprinter Lynn Fox died last Thursday at his home in the Asheville, N.C., area, where he and his wife, Beth, settled in 2012 after a 32-year career in New York City. He was 67. Fox once ran the 100-yard dash in 9.3 seconds. A visitation time is set for 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home in Arden, N.C.
