Area sports notes: Lady Flames win again in NCAA soccer tournament

Lee University won 2-1 in the second overtime Friday night against Mississippi College in the NCAA Division II women's soccer tournament's round of 16 on Lee's field. It was the third OT win in the bracket for the Lady Flames (16-6-1), who got a tying goal at 73:01 from Mia Hollingsworth, assisted by Lauren Peters, and the winner at 107:13 by Peters from Hollingsworth, on a rebound shot. Sunday at 2 p.m., Lee will host third-ranked Columbus State, which edged Lincoln Memorial 3-2 on Olivia Jarrell's header 9:11 into overtime.

* Kerem Daser has resigned effective Nov. 30 as the Dalton State College director of soccer and the only head coach the men's and women's programs have had. His men have gone 43-23-6 in four years, including 7-9-2 this season; the women were 6-7-3 for a 22-21-5 three-year record. "I want to thank Coach Daser for his efforts in starting soccer at Dalton State, and I wish him much success in all his future endeavors," athletic director Jon Jaudon said in a school release. Daser thanked "the entire Dalton community" for its support and added, "I am proud to have started the soccer programs for both men and women, and I am proud of the manner in which they have represented themselves on and off the field."

* Bryan College sophomore defender Michael Torner from Chattanooga was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 2 first team for NAIA men's soccer. In addition to excelling in the classroom, the 6-foot-4 Torner was a stalwart in the Lions' back line and scored the goal in a 1-0 win over Georgia Gwinnett.

Volleyball

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga ended its season Friday evening with a 3-1 loss to second-seeded Samford in the Southern Conference tournament at UNC Greensboro. The set scores were 25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 25-11. Dani Szczepanski had 14 kills with a .619 hitting percentage, and Gylian Finch and Ally Ford added 12 and 11 for UTC (10-20). Jaquelyn Langhaim had 41 assists and 11 digs, Brenna Everingham also had 11 digs and Miranda Elpers and Megan Kaufman had 10 each. Kaufman is a Google Cloud Academic All-District first-teamer for her 4.0 GPA as a sophomore studying nursing, along with her volleyball ability.

Football

* Three other Google Cloud Academic All-District honorees are football players Bryce Nunnelly and Rashun Freeman of UTC in Division I and senior kicker Michael Jacobs of Sewanee in Division III. Wide receiver Nunnelly is majoring in mechanical engineering and has a 3.85 GPA; fellow sophomore Freeman is a defensive back with a 3.36 and is studying engineering technology management. Jacobs is majoring in biology with environmental studies.

Golf

* Calhoun's Mike Nance and Marietta's James Davenport finished in a three-way tie for first at 202 Friday in the 2018 Georgia Senior Four-Ball at King and Prince Golf Course at Saint Simons Island, but the Columbus duo of Carter Mize and Wright Waddell won on the first playoff hole. The winners both are in the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, and they won four Georgia Four-Balls together through 2004.

Basketball

* Luke Smith and Hunter Buescher had 19 and 17 points and four and six assists Friday night as the Sewanee men's team improved to 3-0 with a 91-78 home win over Johnson University of Knoxville in the Lon Varnell Classic. Smith was 5-for-7 on 3-point shots and Jordan Warlick was 4-for-5 in scoring 15 points, while Joey Knox was 6-of-8 from the field while adding 13 points. Cam Caldwell had nine rebounds with nine points.

* The Sewanee women lost 60-59 to Huntingdon at the LaGrange Classic. Kinsley Logan and Lakeisha Phillips had 12 and 11 points and seven rebounds each for the Tigers (3-2), who last led at 55-54, and Sue Kim had 10 points and four assists.

* Covenant's Lady Scots lost 89-47 in their season opener at fifth-ranked Thomas More (3-0), which reached the Division III national tournament semifinals last year. Taylor Robinson scored 17 points with three 3-pointers for Covenant, and Margo Koby collected 10 rebounds.
