Area sports notes: Lee's Mia Hollingsworth a D-II soccer All-American

The Lee University women's soccer team goes into the national semifinals in Pittsburgh tonight with senior forward Mia Hollingsworth as a 2018 All-American. She was named Wednesday to the United Soccer Coaches Association's All-America third team for NCAA Division II. Despite missing several games while recovering from a concussion, the four-year captain has scored 14 goals this season, including the overtime winner in a postseason defeat of No. 2-ranked West Florida and the tying shot in the eventual win over Mississippi College the next game. West Florida and No. 3 Columbus State were undefeated when the Lady Flames (17-6-1) edged them 1-0 to move on in the NCAA tournament, and tonight at 8 they challenge undefeated and top-ranked Grand Valley State (24-0-1). The Lakers won NCAA titles from 2013 to 2015 and beat the 2017 champion 6-1 in this year's quarterfinal round.

* Sewanee senior Kyle Johnston made the USCA's Division III All-South Atlantic Region third team after his fourth all-conference selection. The Baylor School graduate from the town of Sewanee scored 11 goals in 2018 with four-game winners. He totaled 27 goals and eight assists in his Tigers career.

Tennis

* Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Florida, are in the doubles semifinals of another national-level tennis tournament - this time in the Crabel Capital 60 Men's Masters Invitational at the Mission Hills club in Palm Springs, California. Cash and Vines won their round robin - closing it out with victories of 7-6 (4), 6-1 on Tuesday and 6-2, 6-1 on Wednesday - and now face the duo they recently beat in the USTA 60s clay court nationals.

Basketball

* The Sewanee men's basketball team did not let a visit from 23rd-ranked Emory stop the spotless start to the Tigers' season. Sewanee is 7-0 after beating the Eagles (4-2) 83-70 Tuesday night behind 27 points, six steals and four assists from Luke Smith. Joey Knox hit four 3-point baskets and scored 16 points in the win, while Matt Lee had 12 points and seven rebounds and Hunter Buescher also scored 12. Jonny Crumly blocked three Emory shots.

* Lakeisha Phillips had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Kinsley Logan added 15 points Tuesday night for the Sewanee women, but host Covenant was more balanced and beat the Tigers 67-61. Joanna Smith scored 11 points and Hannah Monday and Raquel Rosa tallied 10 apiece for the Lady Scots (1-3), Monday with eight rebounds. For other Covenant players scored seven to nine points. Sue Kim had six assists and Ellie Treanton four steals for Sewanee (5-4), but each committed eight turnovers.

* After the Bryan College women overwhelmed visiting Montreat 74-36 in Wednesday's Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader in Dayton, the Bryan men completed a sweep by upsetting the 25th-ranked Cavaliers 65-64 on Geevantay Gee's basket with one second left. Austin Douglas and Keaton Dotson led the Lions (5-5, 3-3) with 17 and 15 points. Jeron Hemphill had 25 points, 18 rebounds and four steals for Montreat (6-1, 5-1). The Lady Lions (7-1, 6-0) got 17 points and nine rebounds from To'Nesha Allison and 13 points from Shayla Ludy, plus six assists and eight rebounds from Tesa Johnson.

* Tennessee Wesleyan's women improved to 2-3 in the AAC and 4-3 overall with a 59-56 win at Brenau. Hunter Simpson scored 13 points and Jacobi Lynn added 10 for the Lady Bulldogs, while Hannah Troutt and Kenzie Conn each scored nine, Conn with seven rebounds. Gina Dick pulled down 12 rebounds.

Field Hockey

* Sewanee's Ceara Caffrey, Caroline Sugar and Anne Cleveland were honored Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association as second-team selections for the Division III All-Great Lakes Region team. All-region for the second year in a row, Caffrey had 18 goals with five game-winners and two assists as a junior this past season, and Sugar and Cleveland were freshman defensive stalwarts for the Tigers.
