Area sports notes: UTC men's golfers third in Hummingbird tournament

Led by Etienne Brault and Oliver Simonsen, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team followed up its victory at Memphis two weeks ago with a third-place 562 for Monday's two rounds in the 15-team Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Sapphire, North Carolina. Georgia Southern took a 550 into the final round today, with Wofford second at 559. Morehead State and Florida Atlantic shared fourth place at 564. Brault was tied for the individual lead at 7-under-par 135 (66-69), and Memphis medalist Simonsen was tied for third at 136 (66-70) after ending a school-record run of four consecutive rounds in the 60s. The Mocs' Alex Cobb was tied for 36th at 143. Belmont's Jack Uselton from Tullahoma shared eighth at 137 with a second-round 66.

' The Covenant College men's golfers were in third place out of nine teams Monday after their first round of the 2018-19 season. Playing in the Piedmont Fall Invitational in Clarkesville, Georgia, the Scots shot a collective 310 with Matthew Kent seventh individually at 74 - three strokes behind the leaders at The Orchard - and Will Mayfield tied for 11th at 76. Methodist, the 2018 Division III national champion, took the team lead at 294 with Piedmont at 297 going into today's final round.

' Sewanee moved up three spots to 17th in the Women's Golf Coaches Association national rankings for Division III, announced Monday. That was after a fourth-place finish in the Tigers' only tournament in September. Also from the Southern Athletic Association, Rhodes is sixth, Berry 10th and Birmingham-Southern 21st. Oglethorpe and Centre received votes as well.

' While the TSSAA Division II state golf tournaments were starting in Manchester - they end today - the Signal Mountain boys and Sale Creek girls earned Division I Small (A/AA) berths in a regional Monday at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay. Signal was led by Foster Wood's 70 and Benjamin Burns' 71, and McMinn Central's John Houck and Bradley Dunkle and Tellico Plains' Forrest Atkins will join the Eagles at Manchester. Paced by Hannah and Ashley Holland's 77 and 81, the Lady Panthers will be joined by Signal's Lindsey Hollis, Ashley Portera and April Weaver.

Football

' Sewanee junior wide receiver Micah Maes was honored as the SAA football offensive player of the week after catching 11 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 38-31 win at Hendrix. He also was 1-for-1 as a passer, good for 37 yards. Maes is second in the league in receiving TDs, with five, and fifth in yards per game (66).

Soccer

' The Dalton State men's soccer team lost 1-0 Monday to visiting Mobile in a Southern States Athletic Conference game rescheduled from last Thursday. That dropped the Roadrunners to 4-5-1, 0-2 in the SSAC, with both league losses against NAIA top-five teams. No. 5 Mobile's Yazid Omri scored in the eighth minute from a Lukas Burt assist, and the Rams (9-1, 2-0) had only two other shots on goal, while Dalton State totaled five.

' Bryan College senior Dino Jones was chosen the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer defensive player of the week for his role in two shutout victories. The Lions allowed Bluefield only five shots and three on goal and restricted Truett McConnell to one shot on goal.

Volleyball

' Milligan College had all three AAC volleyball players of the week for the second time this season, including junior setter Kellee Geren from Cleveland High School. Geren was credited with 121 assists in 13 sets, with 42 against Montreat. She had three double-doubles in four matches and totaled 43 digs and 18 kills.

Running

' Covenant senior Lilly Smith is the USA South women's cross country runner of the week for the fourth consecutive time, after winning the Maryville Invitational 6-kilometer race in 23:09.9 for her fourth victory in as many meets. She also led the Lady Scots to their fourth team triumph. Smith has the top three 6k times in program history.
