Area sports notes: Covenant breezes past Berea in volleyball

The Covenant College volleyball team rose to 5-1 in the USA South with a 3-0 win Wednesday at Berea, by the set scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-14. Hannah Harris had seven kills, Sara Delk 18 digs, Sophie Puertas 16 assists, Leah Buys 11 assists, Allie Jakes two block solos and three block assists and Hannah Stewart 10 digs to lead the Lady Scots (7-10 overall).

» Despite 42 assists by Hanna Matthews, 14 kills and 14 digs by Silvia Sartori and 13 kills by Alex Reuter, the Lee University volleyball team lost 3-1 to visiting Division III power Emory. MaKayla Beebe had 25 digs for Lee (8-10), while Bailey Kress had eight kills and Allie Koepfer had 10 digs with seven kills. Emory is 11-4.

» Marjorie Smith and Sydney Ritten each had 11 kills and Gabi Catt had 37 assists in Tennessee Wesleyan's 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) AAC home volleyball win over Bryan on Tuesday. Sovanna Ramirez had 20 digs and Allana Knowles contributed eight kills and three aces for TWU. For the Lady Lions, Anna Owens had eight kills and Veronica Salas had 12 assists and 14 digs.

» The Bryan junior varsity topped Georgia Northwestern 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 12-25, 25-16, 15-4) on Monday in Rossville. Summer Fitzpatrick had 12 kills and Mia Clark 21 assists and four aces for GNTC (4-12).

Auto Racing

» Edmond Hall of Montgomery, Alabama, won the $7,500 top prize in the Pro Modified drag-racing class Saturday night at Brainerd Motorsports Park. He won with a strip-record 4.26-second run at 169 mph in his big-block Chevrolet-powered 2004 Cavalier. Jason Collins of Southside, Alabama, was second in 4.33 seconds. Tevin Pullum of Adairsville, Georgia, won the Super Pro with Steve Dowdy second, and Ray Zumstein won the Foot Brake class with a 6.86-second run on a 6.84 dial in a 1965 Valiant; Gary Rakestraw was second. Drew Brown won in Junior Dragster, which had 24 entries. There were nine classes in action.

Soccer

» Maryville College scored two unassisted first-half goals and beat visiting Covenant 2-0 in USA South women's soccer Wednesday. Maryville is 7-4, 4-0 in the league; Covenant is 4-6-1, 1-2.

» Sewanee's women won 1-0 and the men drew 1-1 in Tuesday night's home games against the Mississippi University for Women. Sam Morgan scored late in the first half for the female Tigers (4-7-2), and Severin Velasco scored in the 79th minute for the Sewanee men (4-5-1). He took six shots with four on goal.

» Visiting Tennessee Wesleyan won 7-0 over the St. Andrews women and 3-2 in overtime over the St. Andrews men in AAC makeup games Tuesday. Dayna Randall had two goals and an assist, Livia Walker netted the last two goals and Els van Hooijdonk, Hannah Dearing and Samantha Green also scored for the Lady Bulldogs (3-5-1, 3-2-1), who outshot their hosts 29-2, 18-1 on goal. The TWU men (8-3, 4-1) did all their scoring from the 83rd to the 93rd minute, by Gabriel Gonzalez and twice by Harry Baggaley.

Golf

» Tennessee Wesleyan tied for fifth at 616 and Bryan College finished ninth at 644 in the 11-team men's AAC Fall Preview that concluded Tuesday at Bluefield, Virginia. Point University won at 586. Wesleyan's Tanner Harris tied for eighth individually at 150, and teammates Jeovani Veloz and Trent Mansfield were another stroke back in a tie for 10th, along with Truett McConnell's Dawson Day from Trion, Georgia. Bryan's Kevin Knudsen tied for 22nd at 155 with Peter Brown at 157.

» The Sewanee men's golf team split up into two Georgia tournaments Monday and Tuesday, the "A" Tigers tying for eighth out of 17 teams with a 593 in the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational at Flowery Branch and the "B" team finishing fifth at 619, two shots and one spot behind Covenant, in Piedmont's 10-team event at Clarkesville. Sewanee's Tommy Oliver and Nick Powell were third at 141 and tied for eighth at 144 at Flowery Branch, and Michael Olmsted tied for 11th at 154 along with Colbe Cagle of eighth-place Cleveland State at Clarkesville.
