Area sports notes: Bus trip set for UT-Alabama game

The University of Alabama Alumni's Chattanooga chapter has scheduled a bus trip to Knoxville for the Oct. 20 football game against Tennessee, and nonmembers are invited to join chapter members for the ride. The cost of $140 for members or $155 for nonmembers includes a game ticket as well as the round-trip transportation. Soccer

* The Lee University women's soccer team won 6-0 in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at Spring Hill, but the men's matchup of sides undefeated in league play went the hosts' way, 2-1 in overtime. Lee's Flames (7-3-2, 5-1-1) took the lead 20 minutes in on Samaan Williams' goal from an intercepted pass back to the goalkeeper, but Spring Hill (9-1, 5-0) equalized at 71:14 on Alexander Lipinski's score and won on Matthew Moreno's goal off a free kick at 94:31. Tilman Schober assisted on both. The Lady Flames (7-4-1, 4-3) got two penalty kicks from Kelsey Yoder and one opening the scoring by Devin Healy, plus unassisted goals by Emma Higgins and Mia Hollingsworth and a closing goal by Abbie Vibbert from Kate Carney's assist. They had margins of 28-7 in shots, 15-3 in on-goal attempts and 12-1 in corner kicks.

* Sewanee lost two close Southern Athletic Association soccer games Sunday at Rhodes, 2-1 for the women and 1-0 for the men. Erin Gill gave the Sewanee women (4-9-2, 1-3) a lead in the 12th minute, but the Lynx (6-4, 3-1) scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half and led 12-2 in shots after halftime, 18-10 overall. The Rhodes men (7-3, 3-1) scored late in the first half, when the Tigers (5-6-1, 1-3) had a 4-0 advantage in corners. The Lynx had just a 16-15 edge in shots for the game.

Volleyball

* Sewanee won 3-0 in its SAA volleyball match Sunday at Oglethorpe and lost 3-0 there in a nonconference match against nationally 12th-ranked Emory. Destiny Stewart had 12 kills and Constance Connolly contributed 29 assists and 11 digs for the Tigers (15-6, 5-4) in the 25-21, 25-20, 25-10 defeat of Oglethorpe, when Ellie Pedersen had seven kills and three aces. In the 25-13, 25-14, 30-28 loss to Emory (12-4), Connolly had 24 assists and Lilly Reilly, Pedersen and Stewart registered eight, seven and six kills. Peyton Parent had 13 digs.

Field Hockey

* Buckley Norman scored the first goal and assisted Milly Etheridge on the later two as Sewanee beat visiting Hendrix 3-1 in SAA field hockey Sunday, leveling the 7-3 Tigers' league record at 1-1. Hadley Meadows assisted Norman's goal at 11:27, and Rachel Blum made nine saves. Etheridge has nine goals for the season.

Golf

* The Georgia Northwestern men's golf team plays today and Tuesday in the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament at Penn State University, where the Bobcats led with nine holes to play last year but wound up fourth. Sophomores Lane Strickland and Cole Roberts are back from that experience, joined by freshmen Noah Hankins, Spencer Alexander and Ryan Redd for coach Eddie Jackson. Also back are the top three 2017 team finishers: champion SUNY-Delhi, Cleary from Michigan and St. Mary's of the Woods from Indiana.

Running

* Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runner John Gilpin won a local 10-kilometer race for the second Saturday in a row, this time the Moccasin Bend Fall Classic. Gilpin finished in 33 minutes, 21 seconds, and Meredith Vanveen of Vero Beach, Florida, was the women's winner and 11th overall in 44:21. Masters winner Paul Archambault of Hixson was second overall in 35:51. The 5k winners were Diego Guzman of Dalton in 16:17 and Laryssa Martinovich of Ooltewah in 21:03.

Basketball

* New UTC women's basketball head coach Katie Burrows will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's monthly meeting today at noon at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without; parking costs $1.
