Area sports notes: Dalton State golfers shine in tournaments

The Dalton State men's golfers won the Bojangles Tennessee Intercollegiate for the third time Tuesday with a 54-hole 860 at Tennessee National Club in Loudon, and host Tennessee Wesleyan was second out of 10 teams at 874. Tanner Harris led TWU. DSC's Ben Rebne was third individually at 213, and Zach Womack and Sport Allmond were fourth at fifth at 214 and 216. The NAIA's third-ranked DSC women tied for fourth in the stacked NAIA National Championship Preview at Oklahoma City, and the Lady Roadrunners' Katie Dalton won a three-player medalist playoff that included teammate Isabel Rijos after they shot even-par 144. Dalton made a birdie on the second playoff hole. Hannah Gasaway and Cameron Daniel tied for 39th. No. 2 SCAD Savannah was the Preview team champion at 592 with Texas Wesleyan second at 598, USC-Beaufort third at 602 and Dalton State and Loyola (New Orleans) next at 606.

* Lee University's Scott Odell tied for 15th individually at 2-over-par 215 and the Flames finished 14th at 892 in the Copperhead Championship held Monday and Tuesday at Innisbrook, Florida. The 16-school tournament included 11 NCAA Division II Top 25 teams, and No. 1 Barry won by 24 strokes at 834. Dylan Lillard and Connor Pollman shot 225 and 226 for Lee.

* Led by two of the three co-medalists, Covenant College won its three-team Reeder Cup with a 300 Tuesday at Lookout Mountain Golf Club. That gave the Scots a 36-hole total of 597, 14 shots better than Monday leader Piedmont. Bob Jones University shot 633. Covenant's Marshall Kent closed with a 73 to tie teammate Nathan Hawkins and Piedmont's Griffin Kern for first place at 148, and the Scots' Will DeMersseman and Josh Wall tied for sixth at 151.

Volleyball

* Lee University breezed to a 3-0 Gulf South Conference volleyball victory Tuesday night against visiting Shorter, by the set scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-16. Hanna Matthews had 28 assists and MaKayla Beebe had 19 digs for Lee (11-12, 9-3), while Bailey Kress had 10 kills, 10 digs and four aces. Silvia Sartori and Alex Reuter each had seven kills, and Allie Koepfer had 13 digs.

* Chattanooga State's first-year volleyball team is 11-7 overall and 2-2 in the TCCAA after Tuesday's 3-0 home loss (25-21, 25-13, 26-24) to Walters State. Emily Redden had 28 assists and Dakota Rawiszer had 21 for the Lady Tigers, while Kayla Wimpee had 10 kills and Josie Jordan had 13 digs.

* Covenant lost 3-1 (25-7, 17-25, 25-18, 25-16) to 16th-ranked Berry (18-2) in an NCAA Division III match. Emily Moore had 30 assists and Hannah Harris had 14 digs for the Lady Scots (11-11), while Alexa Spurling and Riley Howe led in kills with eight and seven.

* Milligan junior Kellee Geren from Cleveland High School was the AAC volleyball setter of the week for the third time in a row and the fourth time this season. She had 86 assists in six sets, including 48 in a 3-0 defeat of TWU, and also totaled 15 digs.

* Hiwassee defeated Georgia Northwestern 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21) in Rossville, but Jamese Miller had 11 kills, Mia Clark 13 assists and four aces and Savannah Walker eight kills, nine blocks and six aces for GNTC (6-16).

Soccer

* Harry Baggaley's two first-half goals for Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday ultimately sent the NAIA's 12th-ranked Reinhardt men's soccer team to its first loss of the season, 2-1 in AAC play in Athens. Tom Lake assisted on Baggaley's second score for the third-place Bulldogs (11-4, 6-2). Reinhardt is 10-1-2, 7-1-1. TWU junior Ben Timms was the AAC defensive player of the week.

* Kyle Johnston's goal with three minutes left in regulation time gave Sewanee a 1-0 nonconference men's soccer win Tuesday night against visiting Piedmont (7-4-3). Johnston's 10th goal of the season came off a free kick with Alpo Sipila getting the assist. James Murray made two saves in the shutout, as the Tigers (7-7-1) led 19-6 in shots, 9-3 in shots on goal and 12-1 in corner kicks.

Bocce

* Bill Caulkins won the 15th annual local Calvanese Singles Bocce Tournament last Saturday. Adam Dyer took second place.
