Area sports notes: Joshua Woods' teams first, second in Southern mixed doubles

Two Chattanooga tennis teams with Joshua Woods as captain finished first and second in their divisions of the 2018 USTA Southern Mixed Doubles Sectional Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Southern Section reported Monday the outcomes of the Oct. 12-14 competition. Woods' 18-over 9.0 team won its round-robin format with a team from Asheville, North Carolina, second. His 18-over 8.0 group lost 2-1 in the final against Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Golf

* Ashley Gilliam of Manchester, Tennessee, was among the American Junior Golf Association Rolex Junior All-America honorees announced Monday. The Tullahoma High School senior was one of 24 girls receiving honorable mention, along with Alyssa Montgomery of Knoxville. Rachel Heck of Memphis and Michaela Morard of Huntsville, Alabama, were among the 12 first-team girls; no Tennessee girls made the second team. Knoxville's Ryan Hall was a first-team boy. Gilliam, who has committed to play collegiately for Mississippi State, has a Rolex AJGA ranking of 38, had two top-10 finishes in 2018 AJGA tournaments and reached the U.S. Girls' Junior quarterfinals. She followed her 2017 playoff victory in the Tennessee Girls' Junior with a 14-stroke win this year.

* David Noll Jr. of Dalton had the clinching singles win for the Georgia golf amateurs Monday as they edged the Georgia PGA 17-15 in the Billy Peters Cup Matches played this year at Harbor Club in Greensboro. Mike Nance of Calhoun also was on the winning GSGA team, which took a one-point lead into the closing singles matches and got seven wins and three half-points. Noll won 1 up. Each team had 16 players.

* With Marshall Kent tied for third individually with a 1-under-par 71, the Covenant College men's golf team shared seventh place at 303 out of 19 teams after Monday's first round in the annual Chick-fil-A Invitational at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Georgia. The field includes several NCAA Division III Top 50 teams. Central Alabama led at 286. Covenant's Nathan Hawkins and Will DeMersseman shot 75 and 77. Sewanee's B team is in the tournament and was 14th at 312 with Gray Matthews at 74, Alan Whitehead at 77 and Zack Russell at 79, and Cleveland State's young program was 19th, led by Jared Thomas' 82.

Volleyball

* Chattanooga State is 12-7 in its first volleyball season after a dominating 3-0 home win Monday over The Crown College. The set scores were 25-11, 25-10, 25-17. Sidney Killingsworth had 10 kills and 10 aces and was in on four blocks for the Lady Tigers, who got seven kills from Kayla Wimpee and 20 assists from Emily Redding. "A really good team effort tonight! We played well and took care of business," coach Janet Tate said. "We are now getting ready for the region playoffs this weekend."

* Sewanee freshman middle blocker Ellie Pedersen was honored Monday as the Southern Athletic Association volleyball offensive player of the week for the second time. She had nine kills in just two sets against Centre, 13 against Rhodes and 14 against Hendrix and compiled a .571 attack percentage without an error for the week. She's been errorless the past six SAA matches, with a .544 percentage.

* Covenant freshman Riley Howe was selected the USA South volleyball rookie of the week for her 30 kills in three matches, including 14 against Huntingdon. She also totaled 16 digs and five aces.

Soccer

* Covenant freshman Austin Berry from Signal Mountain and Chattanooga Christian School was chosen the USA South men's soccer rookie of the week for his part in two shutout victories. He sandwiched two goals around an assist in a 3-0 defeat of LaGrange.

* Covenant's women are seeded third in the West Division and will host sixth seed Agnes Scott at 4 p.m. Wednesday as the USAS tournament begins. The winner will visit East No. 2 Salem on Saturday.

* Sewanee's fifth-seeded women and sixth-seeded men will open SAA tournament play Saturday at Hendrix and Centre, respectively.
