Area sports notes: UTC women's soccer team shut out at Lipscomb

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team was shut out for the first time this season, losing 3-0 Sunday night at Lipscomb in Nashville. UTC (3-3) trailed 1-0 at halftime after Riley Henry's goal on a double assist by Olivia Doak and Maycie McKay in the seventh minute. McKay had another assist in the 52nd minute, setting up Emanuela Schurch this time, and Henry scored again in the 83rd, again with McKay's help. The Bison (3-1-2), who won the Atlantic Sun Conference's regular-season title last season, outshot UTC 12-7 overall and 5-3 on goal. Lipscomb's Kate Mason made four saves to earn the shutout in goal. UTC's Melia Correa stopped two shots in her fourth start of the season.

* The Dalton State College women are undefeated through three matches after their 2-0 home win against North Carolina's St. Andrews on Sunday at Lakeshore Park. The Lady Roadrunners notched both of their goals in the 57th minute, Sarah Chamale on an assist by Kaela Ebanks, and Adriana Romero with help from Rocio Carrizales. Dalton State dominated shots, 22-1 overall and 10-1 on goal, and took four corner kicks to none for St. Andrews, which was opening its season. Sydnee Newton made one save to earn the shutout in goal.

General

* Bryan College was one of only 12 schools receiving the maximum 100 points among the 72 NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Gold Award winners for 2017-18. Tennessee Wesleyan earned bronze recognition (60-74 points) in the measurement of "growth in training, promotion, conduct in competition and commitment in five key areas" for the entire athletic program, according to a Bryan release.

Field Hockey

* Sewanee won 5-2 against Eastern Mennonite on Sunday, with the Tigers (1-1) leading 4-0 before their visitors got back-to-back goals in the 53rd and 57th minutes. Milley Etheridge got her third goal of the contest - Ceara Caffrey had the other two for Sewanee - in the 59th minute. Etheridge also had an assist, as did Buckley Norman and Molly Wheeler, and Kadie Hicks made a save while sharing time in goal with Rachel Blum. Eastern Mennonite, outshot 35-5, fell to 1-1 this season.

Cross Country

* Led by Lilly Smith's course- and program-record 12:42.68 for two miles, the host Covenant College women took the top four places and five of the top six Friday in the Mountaintop Invitational cross country meet on Lookout Mountain. Smith took a whopping 24 seconds off the four-year-old record. Covenant also won the men's 5-kilometer race with Nate Collins first in 17:09.42, Matthew Tueller second, Matthew Broussard fourth, Matt Seitz sixth and Micaiah Allison eighth in the four-team competition. Following Smith for the Lady Scots were S.K. Lipperd second, Michelann Settle third, Hannah Samuels fourth and Maggie Henry sixth. Sewanee was second in both races with Jack Barganier seventh and Bram Atkins ninth in the 5k and Maren Czura and Avery Jordan eighth and ninth in the 2-miler. Cleveland State had both fifth-place individuals, Luis Perez and Madison Guider, and the 11th-place guy, Derek Gallardo.
